We've had some stone tracks in for 9 years now, never done any maintenance to any of them, I think you need the right stuff.
The is nothing suitable around here, its all soft shillate, so we have to buy in crushed concrete.
My milking platform has 5 different landowners, none of whom would like me putting stone tracks across the middle of fields but they're all quite happy for me to lay sleepers because they can so easily be removed, and I'm happy because I don't have capital tied up in tracks that I would lose if I lost the land.
