Really is a learning day today :) . The Wildlife Trust descends upon here occasionally, so I'll ask for formal ID on fluttery creatures that are red with black next time.

Moths are fascinating. But in the Times recently stated that 2/3 of uk public were “afraid” of them :(

Landlord here has just released water voles into main stream running through my place, not that I will see them !
A bit more concern is their idea of introducing beavers into the area !!? ( National Trust is LL )

Anyhoo. I've been thinking.
Shouldn't there be some sort of financial incentive to preserve old farm buildings ? Think of the number of creatures that use them, barn owls, lizards, swallows, bats..... Yet these buildings are being converted at an alarming rate. We noticed a dramatic increase in swallows here when a neighbouring farm courtyard was converted to holiday lets. If money is dished out for other wildlife habitats, why not farm buildings ?

They would be better for wildlife if they weren’t restored though surely?

Lots round here that were virtually demolished in process of conversion to
residential would have been better left, but at a cost of course, so a grant ‘not to repair or convert’?

I'm sure I remember a grant for building specific buildings for Owls, bats etc to live in.

We couldn't get anything with the English scheme. They weaselled about the condition of the buildings - although saying it would be good to see traditional buildings used for their farming purpose, which is all that was needed.

I've since come across beautiful cob places wrecked by bahhn conversion silversand cement renders and stone varnishes.
