Contract Rearing Pigs

Is your building 380m or your land, if you could put shed further away to over 400 it would help, also prevailing wind direction might have a impact,
We have never had complaints but neighbours are nw of us and 420m, our biggest hurdle was ammonia emissions and sssi sites, do your homework as planning can get very expensive
What were you able to do to mitigate the ammonia emmissions? I am assuming you have 1000 pig sheds/straw/ galebreaker sidescreens?

All the usual, fans and curtains, but on our last application we had moved from wean to finish to a super nursery system, keeping 3x more headage but only for 5 weeks on farm, which NE were more than happy with

I am interested to learn more - are these additional curtains to the galebreaker screens? Fans? How does that work with a shed that is open sided when the Galebreakers are down? Just fans or some sort of scrubber system?
Thanks

The fans basically draw the hot air from the apex in the roof and sends it higher into the atmosphere, where it’s meant to disperse at a more diluted rate than blowing out of doors and windows 🤔 bloody more like job creation and a few more quid down the pan to get pp I reckon! Thou on a still day they would drag more air through buildings, the curtains we have are as good as galebreaker but not as expensive, plus you can diy fit them if you have good skills with tools and tape measure, with a full auto weather station

It's interesting that there is a move to separate nursery and finishing sites. The trend for all in all out wean to finish has led to a shortage of grow/finish space.

I am amazed that the fans would satisfy the planners - still the same total amount of ammonia leaving the shed?

Don’t think it was by choice, just not the finishing spaces available, don’t see it lasting for long, transport and stress off moving takes the edge of this system, but it ticks a lot of other boxes like same source and getting piglets started better

There wont be any more finishing spaces either if the planners keep making it nigh on impossible put up pig units! The demand for pork will be met, just it will travel half way around the world - but councils/planners wont have the ammonia emissions on their doorstep so its not a problem :banghead:

I'm currently looking at free range finishing, more out of necessity than anything else. Of course doesn't need PP.

I have put the shed as far away as possible but can’t get it to 400m. I am doing a pre planning application to try get an understanding of weather it will be possible before Like you say spending thousands on full planning application.
Maybe if you measure again it might be more than 400M?
