Contractor dumps 40ft header

I think that they worked in two fields beside each other. As soon as the 2nd one got going in its (2nd) field, he had to move the 1st one to another (3rd) field. They had to dedicate 2 tractors and trailers to each Combine. But there was a lot of time wasted in taking headers on on off. It was a huge logistical nightmare that just didn’t work.

2 x 20’ Combines would have completed harvest just as quick, because they wouldn’t need to remove the header every time they changed fields.

And we haven’t even mentioned the in field trees and electric poles!
In terms of capital required and running costs is there much difference between the 2 ? Do 40 footers have a good 2nd hand / export value ?

Yes, and No
The bit I cant get my head around -is the big crawler ,chaser bin ,fleet of artic trailers, support vehicle ,tractor to pull the header trailer and new drier that appear to be required to do this efficient low cost type of farming system that apparently according to some has low overheads, less labour and is much simpler/easier to manage .

The topic of header size has come up at home as well recently. My cousin wants a 30ft flex head but my uncle and father are dead set against it. Despite the fact that last year the farm was cut by two hired machines with 30 ft headers.

The machine is more than capable of 30ft but my cousin lost and they got a 25ft. Price was Hardly any different between the two sizes. It’s just the mindset. I’d rather have oversized machinery that can be driven slower and get things done in a timely manner then move onto the next job.

But you are not classed as a proper farmer unless you have a row of tracked machines, all polished and hp d up to the neck.

They do seem to get done in august now compared to a few years ago it was always September or later , whether it's more profitable I don't know, but tax management/ efficiency is a major factor I think influencing policy decisions

why does it matter to some people what size , colour , system or whatever , that other businesses choose to do.
I’m sure everyone has their own reasons and have thought about the pros and cons of their decisions without worrying what a few folk on here think.

I’m surprised that a header hasn’t been designed that folds up like the maize headers do on the forage harvester .
Claas even make one themselves, I think it’s only a c430 mind for the Avero but they still make one. Laverda and lely made them in the past

Two combines can be at two different customers at the same time, simple as that really
and if your customers are generally 1 man outfits it is much better to have 2 25ft combines on 2 farms with 2 farmers with 10T trailers chasing than have a single 40ft combine on one farm where the client cant keep up with the haulage and isn't willing to pay to run a second trailer.
