Why is that then ? , What does it cost you to empty your store on to the field next to it ?

Considerably less than it costs to empty it onto a field 2 miles away, with the tanker at least it takes twice as long. With the umbilical there's a lot less setting up and cleaning up, less pipe wearing away, not to mention the pumping probably requires half the tractor that pumping it two miles does... although thats just a guess as I thanfully have never had a day on the pumps. It does look like the most dull job in the world... requiring a good book/TV/phone by the looks of it.

Engine driven pump ,cost is a lot less than with tankers ,we run 2 3000 gal tankers and they can move a lot in a day but the umbilical can move more in 1 hour then they can all day

I was meaning it should cost less to umbilical onto the field behind the store than it costs to umbilical 2 miles away. You're going to get a reduced rate with the tankers with every mile anyway, but I would have thought tankers would be by the hour. Umbilical should surely be by the hour too as the setting up time for a long pump will be longer than for a short pump. Also for a short pump you could get away with a fraction of the money sitting on the pumping end? I mean it's great you have an engine that can pump 4km, but the farmers old David Brown could probably pump the field behind the store?

We have 2 reelers and we can put out 4000 meters of hose very fast and with the hose humper wrap it all up fast again, it is a horse's for courses thing ,we do a lot of specialist jobs that other people can not do for one reason or the other and like a new challenge from time to time

But if were to mow just put crop straight into a swaf ?
You could but you wouldn’t want to do it with a mower conditioner really as it would hammer the crop plus picking up a 10ft swath with a spf be bloody painful so you’d need to rake it which again would hammer the crop plus stones as @mtx.jag says hence the need for direct cut headers.
I’m sure some people do mow it to chop and obviously they do to bale it
