what is the advantages of rolling ploughed ground before drilling, one pass power harrow.
contractor turned up yesterday and wanted to roll the ploughed fields before sowing barley
land was ploughed jan-feb time and is firm enough.
asked him to put on a front press if concerned
Is there any advantage to it ? with the price of diesel :(

Very popular round here is to use cambridge rolls with the levelling paddle boards on them in front of the combi drill.
Drill contractors love it as it makes for more speed for them.
Tractor drivers love it as its far more fun levelling with 6m than an old Hays 3m.
Can seriously empty a tank of fuel on hard going though.

Think that might be a polite way of him telling you your ploughing is god awful 😂😅
contractor ploughed it
Its pretty good to be fair and i went round the endriks we the levelers so all is good.
This is the first time hes wanted to go round with the cambridge rollers, haven't done it in previous years.
Could understand if it was new ploughed ground or going into grass but just think the press is just as good
He's coming this afternoon so we'll see what he brings

Smoother, better breakdown with the cultivator after rolling, less fuel use, easier to keep it straight, faster forward speed. 100% recommended.

turned up with a new to him one pass drill with a front hopper so no front press this year.
He's going to allow us to use his paddle roller on our tractor so should save on fuel cost and labour, 120 hp compared to his 250 john deer.
Might ask if he got a press next year when hes ploughing, might help
