I do not feel the legislation needs to go as far as that applying to HGV's. We need a hybrid between current agric vehicle legislation and the HGV legislation. Agric vehicles will be doing nothing like the same speeds and distances that HGV's do. A 44 tonne gross train weight, annual test on tractor and trailer (only if you want to exceed 31T gross train weight) plus regular service records that can be done in house.
What you are proposing is not really very fair to the hauliers running hgvs with all the legislation they have to endure though? At the 31tonne train weight we have now it is not short of an eight wheeer lorry anyway and you know as well as I do that maintenance of brakes and lights etc are no where near good enough on farm kit ( there will be some exceptions but not many) not to mention the hours that farmers and contractors think are acceptable compared to hgvs I could go on and on about this agriculture as a whole needs to brush up on maintenance of brakes lights and weights etc to come anywhere near the haulage industry.

I think an increase in carrying capacity is needed, but only for field to farm, for farms own produce. Not running 10s of miles making money out of haulage
The weight carried is fairly academic as I have never heard of anyone getting pulled up for overloading? The trailer is full when it’s full and our trailers are crazy weights empty compared to hgv where weight is a big concern, even that accident on the breakers section with Jcb fastrac and tanker along with beetle car, defective tyres and brakes were found but still fines were only hundreds of pounds, now I can guarantee if that was an hgv involved there would be huge fines possibly putting the business down and heartache for years fighting the case also costing thousands then still being branded a criminal afterwards. Farmers do not know they are living when it comes to use of the road and we should sort out the safety aspects of our gear and drivers before asking for more.
