Should be no issue. Dont get too cheap a one. Local co is famous for fitting garage doors which las 12 months, by which time they are a new company, still got 30 years experience in the ads though:)

Would the old door fit anywhere else if you bought a new one? Not so hard to justify then I guess? Sounds like he priced it high as he doesnt want the job but would happily fit a new door for you!

Had a chap out this morning and after sucking air through his teeth said it would be £2500 for a motor and remote open. Asked how much for a new complete door ?£2750. :scratchhead:
Sounds a bit much. It was only £400 extra for my electric door (3 phase) compared to manual.
As an aside, is it possible to do the reverse, and change electric back to manual ?

we had manual doors on a new grain shed, it soon became obvious they were hopeless, so the door firm came and fitted electric it wasnt a big job, they just cut away the sprockets and fitted a motor direct onto the main winding shaft.

cost-wise no idea its was the landlords shed not mine. getting the sparky to add 3 phase trips. isolators and sockets etc probably cost as much again

Hi guys, yes 9/10 you can fit a electric motor to an existing manual door. Price wise, we usually quote locally about £700 & vat for what we would call a conversion. If you want to put the door on remote control option this is when it gets expensive, the remote itself is cheap enough but you have to put 2 safety devices on the door just in case the door falls on anyone by accident. These are called a photocell and safety edge device. These items and remote work out about £450 & vat depending on the size of the door. If we was to do the job for yourselves we would be looking around £1600 & vat. Any questions please ask

Thanks lee

Hi Lee, The chap today said that he couldn't attach a motor to the nylon gears so it would have to have a new tube which was where the cost was. Although the remote is expensive, that is really the reason for having the electric, a recent leg injury means that I could do without getting on and off machines when going in and out. The door has to stay shut most of the time. I will give you a call tomorrow.

Hi, yes he is correct you shouldn't fit a metal gear from the new motor to the existing plastic gear. Realistically any door company should be able to unbolt the existing plastic gear and fix a new gear or sprocket to the existing barrel. Even though this means removing the barrel out of the door, putting the new gear or sprocket on the barrel on the floor and then refitting back to the door. You shouldn't need a new barrel from our experience. No probs speak to you tomorrow. Cheers lee
