Copping straw.

Has anyone tried chopping straw with a precision chop forage harvester instead of a rotogrind machine.
Leave it stationary & push the bale towards it slowly????

There's a video on YouTube of a new Holland spfh doing this. Grunts a bit. Think I'd use a spreadabale to fluff it up a bit first.

Yes we used our JF forager but we found it to be a bit slow so now we get our bales chopped by the contractor when they are being bailed and then we put them in our feeder wagon and Chop them again

Local big herd used a contractor and self propelled for a few year till they blew the forager up big style.

They use a rotogrind now.

Chop ours with contractors big jd can do 40 quads hr easy , pull strings off and he drives into them , does 5-6 big farms round here with it no mither

Our 404M earnt it's keep last winter chopping feed straw, biggest problem was the wind late winter just blowing it away as it was chopped, we don't have a mixer just use the loader bucket to mix it with the silage.

@cattow @Cowski what size bales do you find best in 404m? Putting 4x3’s in ours 1/3 at a time with the shear grab, can’t use a normal grab as all the wads fall apart.

We set up 4 six string bales (2wide 2high) long ways then back the chopper onto them, put the bale to be chopped on top of the stack, cut the strings then nudge it in with the grab. Bale size doesn’t matter but the type of straw makes a huge difference. With good straw it’s nearly a 2 man job to keep feeding it, just as fast as our contractor was with a tub grinder if you get the right straw. 50-60 6 stringers in a day no worries in good going. Awesome to see it set up, can make the fendt 718 sweat a bit.

The limited factor with the teagle is loading, there’s a vid on YouTube where an fixed chute/table is used to feed it.
