A Westcountry farm supplies co-operative founded almost 100 years ago is to be sold to a rival business in a £6 million deal.

The trading business of Cornwall Farmers, with 12 stores in Devon and Cornwall, is to be acquired by Countrywide Farmers.

A spokesman for Cornwall Farmers said the move would create more choice for their customers and give Countrywide a bigger presence in the South West.

Under the terms of the deal, which is expected to complete early next month, Countrywide will take on the operation of Cornwall Farmers country stores for a total consideration of £6.050m.

Cornwall Farmers Ltd will retain the freehold property, with Countrywide entering into long lease agreements as tenant.

Countrywide Farmers Chief Executive, John Hardman, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to bring together these two highly respected brands to create a stronger offering to our customers. Cornwall Farmers has a long and proud history with experienced, knowledgeable staff. We look forward to welcoming them and the store network in Cornwall and Devon to the Countrywide family.”

Simon Birch, Chief Executive of Cornwall Farmers, said: “This deal is good news for our customers in the South West.

Surprised that CFL managed to draw out the inevitable so long. Also surprised that anyone would want to buy such a lame horse.
Feel very sorry for John Rich who has seen all his great work wasted by a totally inept few.
There were plans for a centenary book documenting the history of CFL ....... it won't be needed now!

They sold most of the farming side up here as in direct loads of feed and fertiliser, now just run shops

This was last year
Countrywide Farmers’ most recent accounts to 31 May 2014 were published in late August, with the mild winter of 2013-14 and a falling commodity market significantly affecting financial performance. Turnover fell 2.5% to £298.2m, while operating profit was down 55% to £1.907m.
