Cereals 2020: Resilience and innovation at the heart of Corteva Agriscience

Leading global crop protection and seed company, Corteva Agriscience, continues to place innovation at its core and is showcasing the brightest pipeline in the industry at Cereals 2020.

The switch to an online format for this year’s show demonstrates resilience within the industry – a theme that has run through Corteva’s product development since its formation 12 months ago.

Corteva’s commitment to oilseed rape is unwavering. It remains a vital break crop for UK arable farmers but in the past few years the well-documented challenges around establishment have required a rethink on establishment techniques and variety choice.

The first applications of Belkar® – a new post-emergence herbicide for superior control of a wide range of broadleaf weeds in winter oilseed rape – were made in autumn 2019 and represent a new option for farmers who want to see crops emerge before deciding on their herbicide investment.

Farmers are able to watch a video on how Belkar can help to facilitate the establishment of a successful oilseed rape crop with a lower financial risk taken at the start of the season.

The launch of Korvetto® in January further demonstrates Corteva’s commitment to providing farmers with the tools they need be competitive and profitable.

The contact herbicide which is applied in the spring to winter oilseed rape, is a highly effective broadleaf weed killer, regardless of whether farmers applied good autumn programmes.

Exciting developments in seed breeding from Pioneer are being brought to market ahead of this year’s planting. PX131 is a new top-yielding maximus semi-dwarf hybrid that has been added to the 2020 AHDB Descriptive List.

It exhibits all the classic semi-dwarf characteristics that oilseed rape growers who favour this plant type have come to prefer – suitable for early sowing with vigorous autumn growth but with a spreading growth habit due to its lower more protected growing point.

The addition of PX131 further strengthens the Pioneer portfolio which includes PT279CL – the top Clearfield hybrid on the Recommended List – and high-grossing PT275.

Corteva’s unrivalled pipeline is also delivering novel fungicide molecules such as Inatreq™ active in cereals and Zorvec™ in potatoes.

At a time when farmers are desperate for new chemistry to control key diseases in wheat, Inatreq – the first cereal fungicide from Corteva with its patented IQ4 formulation – has gained authorisation in Ireland. Questar™ will be a landmark product for Irish farmers who will value its unique site of action, robust disease control, and flexible application rate, timing and water volumes.

Zorvec played a leading role in protecting the 2019 potato crop from a severe blight epidemic in June, and now a new co-formulation, Zorvec Endavia®, is available for this season offering unrivalled control of late blight with 10-day persistence and demonstrable movement into new growth.

Corteva is forging powerful partnerships with organisations which make a difference and enrich the British agricultural industry. Working with LEAF to deliver the unique Resilient & Ready programme, the company is playing a leading role in ensuring environmental and business sustainability.

A new sponsorship agreement to support the business leaders of the future has been made with the Nuffield Farming Scholarships programme.

A farmer's experience with Belkar

Ben Larter from Plant Larter Farms, Framlingham, Suffolk discusses his experience with Belkar. Having previously faced challenges with cranesbill, Belkar® has provided Ben with very good control.
Belkar is highly effective against key weeds such as cleavers, cranesbill, fumitory, poppies and shepherd’s purse. Containing Arylex™ active, it allows a wide window of application from September right through to the end of December, as well as several flexible timing and rate options. So, this autumn you can now wait until your crop is established before investing in your weed control programme. For more information visit www.corteva.co.uk/belkar.

Meet the Resilient & Ready farmers

LEAF and Corteva Agriscience set out to work with two businesses but, after receiving a substantial number of applications, doubled the size of the Resilient and Ready initiative.

The four farms – two in Scotland and two in England – will now undergo a tailored programme of training, consultancy and trials, measuring their performance and sharing their experiences with other farmers across the UK. The video features Ben Lowe and Harriet Ross, Craig and Claire Grant, Andy Bason and Nick Down. The programme focuses on providing farmers with access to the best technical insight in to their businesses coupled with the training to enable them to turn theory into commercial application. Practical work to measure and improve aspects of their farms identified as crucial by the participants will focus around Integrated Farm Management (IFM) and include soil health, water quality and biodiversity. Communications training will be provided and farm benchmarking will be carried out.
