As the title really - mother needs hers done, wondering if anyone has a ball-park idea of the cost before we pursue it further. No insurance, obviously.

My mum's was free on the NHS carried out by a local GP's surgery.

This, for Dad, and more recently Mother had her eyes lasered :wideyed: at the age of 78 and it corrected a sight defect she has had since being a child:rolleyes: that was down to a new optician she visited. She now only wears normal reading glasses rather than the jam jar bottoms she has had to wear for donkeys years, she can even see without glasses at all

my boss had terrible eysight since about 13 years of age, short and long vision ,double stigmatism, had lens replacement (cateract),and now her sight is two lines on the chart better than 20/20,changed her life,it was done in optical express (they had an offer on) bristol,it was£3950 total, worth every penny

I have early signs of cataract in one eye according to the opticians I have been using for 57 years - he says he will get it sorted on NHS when it gets worse and will put me down for laser treatment on both eyes which will effectively get rid of the shortsightedness I have had since I was 10 years old.

Apparently you can't laser only one side.

I have two that need doing, my old man had his done about ten years ago ( one at a time ) he can see so well now it's amazing, makes my eyesight feel hopeless!
I'm waiting until I have to get it done as I gave an eye disease, pretty frustrating!

I had mine done last year on the NHS. At 47 I was the youngest having them done by 25 years. All done in Salisbury hospital. The surgeon was excellent, I only had to wait about 12 weeks but I know I was moved up the list because of my job and age. I was on the point of loosing my driving licence because my sight was so bad, I did stop driving at night for 3 months. I think if you go private there may be different options on what lenses you can have but this does depend on your current sight. With my NHS lenses I have great distance vision and need glasses to read.

Surgeon sorted my astigmatism at the same time.

Should have said you have to wait 6 weeks between eyes, and whatever you do keep the eye drops up or it can cause serious issues. Think it was 6 times a day for 4 weeks each eye.

What was it like afterwards ( I need both doing ) I was a bit worried about dry eyes all the time after, does it go back to normal after a while or do you need to do eye drops all the time?

My eyes were not dry but the consultant was very insistant about doing the full course of antibiotic drops. It was eye drops 6 times a day for a month and a patch to protect at night. About the worse that can happen is getting an eye infection. Vision came back almost immediately. It's a bit odd when only 1 was done as each eye would focus in a different place. During recovery I was told no lifting at all. Not even the kettle to start with. That's because lifting weight changes the pressure in the eye and this can easily damage the wound.

I phoned a private health care lot to get a price for my father in laws cataracts, he was at the driving by feel stage! They were after just shy of £4k per eye to have it done in Aberdeen, plus £250 for initial consult! Done that week though. He ended up getting it done within a month on NHS after initially being told it could be as long as 10months.
