and sit in the dark and only eat food that doesn't need heating up?

Perfect.
Many people on benefits are working full time. Their wages are fixed. If they want a pay rise anywhere near inflation they are labeled 'greedy'. Massive dividends and bonuses have been paid to shareholders of these utilities companies. Bosses on huge pay packets. Not many on here are critical of that.

With the cost of housing taking most of the pay of one half of a couple, where is the extra money to come from?
Yes some people heat their homes to hot, they'll have to turn that down. I read the difference between heating to 19 degrees and heating to 22 degrees takes 7% of your bill. I don't know if that's correct. There are savings to be made but you can't find what isn't there.

A lot of the holidays being taken were booked before covid and were paid for back then.
Some people are in denial, some are very afraid.

One of Thatcher's ministers Lord Howell? was on Newsnight last night and said the Producers should be levied with a windfall tax. " They can afford it and should pay it"
Short term that would fix it through winter fuel allowance for poorer pensioners , not to the wealthy and the IR know who they are, and those on benefits.

I would say there has to be a cross party long term plan for the future😂
However, the UKs Conservative government s attitude is entrenched in the devil take the hindmost.

In short , if you're not well off , you're fecked!

There will be widespread civil unrest by February. The Conservative government will not know what to do. Labour will be no better. But the incumbent party will have to govern. An interesting December to early April period awaits.

Huge percentage of the bill is to pay the costs of "green production" - i.e. solar panel and wind turbine early adopters. Answer would be to reduce this, but that goes against the promises made when the FITs were introduced. How about taxing them instead, to push some of the money back to the hardest hit? no, I have no idea how it would work, but doesn't seem right that the poorest are paying a windfall to the richest/ those who had spare money to invest ten years ago.

It's worth remembering that over 4 million people are on pre payment meters too, so if they haven't got the cash they have no energy. They can't run up a big bill, they are properly fecked! Oh, and they pay more /unit too for that privilege.

And how do you justify that rediculous statement. Maybe you had not noticed Fits on solar went ages ago and RHI on renewable heating ended in March. First major increase in gas and electric was April this year. Has God started charging for wind solar and hydro. Has Nuclear power suddenly become far more expensive. No its just a con cooked up by the big six generators to get the energy cap lifted. Yes the price of gas has gone up but as 50% is from UK gas fields we should be in a better position than the rest of Europe to curb price increases. You might have your blinkers on when looking at the record profits of shell, bp, and centrica (British gas).

If you ever wondered if the UK is facing a devastating recession here's an example, our electric bill for the farm cafe shop with fridges & freezers is currently 32p a unit but adds up to around £5,000 a month, electric company just contacted daughter to inform her that from 9th of Sept it's going up to 60p a unit £10,000 a month.
If all other businesses are going to be hit like this in the near future then there will be one hell of a lot of closures & unemployed before long!!!

I don't try and justify any statement or proposal, just am highlighting a disparity. But let's not pretend that the removal of FITs from new installations has stopped us all paying for early ones - my own father is getting well north of 50p/kWh for everything his PV panels make, paid out of the roughly £160/household 'environmental and social obligation' (aka green levy).

As to the rest of your rant, I'm sorry but I'm not going to engage.

That's a fair chunk of change. It must get to a point where it's cheaper to run generators. Just read that ICE cars are going to be cheaper to run soon - I've not double checked that, before anyone jumps on me.

Back of fag packet calculation:

Diesel @ 45mpg (10mpl) = 18p/mile (based on £1.80/litre)
EV @4mpkWh (250Wh/m) = 7p/mile (based on domestic price cap @ 28.11p/kWh)

I think EV still wins, but it's getting closer.
But then you have to factor in the price of the car & depreciation.

That's equivalent to 20kW running continuously. I'd be having a good look at what's burning all the power and how you can throttle back consumption if it was my business.
