been asked to give some one rough idea of cost to do 5 acre field. horsey people.
Cut , turn , row and bale..

Given the actual grass content of hay is worth no more than £1/small bale (ie you can rent a field capable of doing 100 bales/acre for no more than £100/acre, possibly less depending on the area) it follows that if you take the price of bought in small bale hay in your area, take off a £1, then what you're left with is the absolute lowest possible value of the machinery, consumables and knowledge/experience of the person making the hay.

So if someone has the grass for 'free' (ie they own a field) then they should expect to have to pay a contractor no less than the going local rate for bought in hay minus £1 in order to turn that 'free' grass into a usable product. If they're not prepared to pay that at bare minimum then they are undervaluing the contractors machinery, experience and costs, and overvaluing their grass. The contractor would be better advised to go and rent a field locally and apply his machinery and knowledge to that instead, he will receive a higher return on his time and capital.

Then as mentioned above there is the issue of risk - who makes the decision to mow, and takes the weather risk? That needs to be established before the mower goes in.

Had a horsey type stride up to me today asking if I'd cut her 3 acre field. She got very uppity when I said no, complaining it would only take five minutes.
When I pointed out I wouldn't even be able to turn in her paddock (front mounted and trailed mocos) she just stormed off in a huff.
Horses are great, mainly in a lasagne, but horsey people are a pain in the arse.

100 bale per acre crop
10p per bale to mow
20p per bale to ted 4 times
5p per bale to row up
40p per bale to bale it
so 75p per bale or £75/acre to make it
