What is the labour charge for a complete engine rebuild including crank shaft bearings. A few of us were chatting in the local the other night , and we had variations from €1500 to €4000 for a six cylinder , parts not included.

Main dealer, man with a van or mates rates will all have different labour rates as will genuine or aftermarket parts as parts will be needed and why would anyone fit parts that they do not know the origin of,? and there's engine rebuilds and engine rebuilds. How far do you wants go. Personally your question is almost impossible to answer as massive variations WILL arise

What’s a rebuild? Head and sump off, new liners, rings and crank bearings with the engine still in situ or a proper engine out, full strip down, everything checked, measured all wearing parts replaced?

Done in situ it’s two to three days work. Proper rebuilt will take a lot longer

Labour for a 6 cylinder 400 hp engine I charge £3000 or there about.
This includes a little risk money if anything was to go wrong that is a proper rebuild with all bearings including cam and thinking gears , waterpump rebuilt and bench run
4 cylinder Perkins 1100 series £800-£1000
Yep, that's exactly where I'd be at too. The number of times I come across a supposedly 'rebuilt' engine that has maybe had the sump off and pistons out is unreal! So it depends what the OP classes as a rebuilt engine. My view is that you've to end up with a bare block and fully re-assemble having cleaned/measured and rebuilt all the components as required to achieve new or very nearly new spec. Something which takes time i'm afraid, so I'd expect figures to vary quite a bit on the work involved. Especially as some engines are much better thought out than others i.e. liners that can be replaced as opposed to re-bore and oversized components. Open deck vs closed deck...

So it's quite a broad question really, but I think a lot of the replies so far ain't far off the mark. The person getting Merc engine sorted as a job lot for £2500 + VAT got a good rate.

I don't know what it cost to do up an engine. we send away the complete engine to a man here when it needs done if its a front line machine. our man will bore out the old liner, press in a new one and bore it out to the right size again for the new piston/rings, never had a problem with him yet. think last we paid was 1500 odd for a 390 engine and then pump and injectors on top

What sort of warranty would a man in van provide for the rebuilt motor compared to a dealer?
Come to think of it do dealers actually rebuild motors these days or just try to sell you a new one?
