Could the unthinkable happen?

Most of us pay insurance premium tax in ever increasing amounts. What is that about, other than a stealth tax ? Are they trying to discourage people from taking out insurance? Why not pile another big chunk on fags, booze , television subscription, playstations and any other detrimental indulgences?
trying to stop people using their own vehicle to cut down on emissions is the most likely

I am not sure that the government will be encouraged to build much more housing and after the Grenfell disaster who can blame them.
Well I could! Given the skewed planning arrangements in the U.K. It's difficult to see who else has the capacity to achieve a large increase in housing supply. Yes it is difficult to get right but is that a reason not to try? Personally I would be in favour of giving public service workers preferential treatment in the housing market. Especially in the south east.

Curious, why is it the job of central government to provide housing, is it not up to local gov or the city in which housing is needed............or dare I say private build with an incentive from local government.
because we have developed a socialist based idealology where nanny state has to do it all, as too many are lazy and would sooner get nanny to clothe feed and house them rather than help themselves

Well yeah but to create more housing from the private sector there needs to be either planning reform or sanctions against developers who sit on land. Nimbyism is huge factor even round here as well.

Bit of a chicken and egg this one. The only people with the capacity to do "serious" house building are the government but successive administrations have ignored the problem, I believe, because making housing more affordable creates a large number of losers as property prices fall.
That is it, there are trillions tied up in property investments

Nimbyism has been fuelled by flouting plannning conditions by big business, developers and particularly supermarkets. Every application is met by suspicion and resistance because nobody believes that restrictions will be met or enforced. Some resistance is ill founded and ill informed but the record of authorities in addressing public concern has been derisable. Thus the immediate reaction is to appose any proposal without due and informed consideration and fight to the death.
