Could the unthinkable happen?

You could directly employ someone [or two sharing the job] for maybe four hours a day, nearly every day of the year for that. Maybe local or maybe a foreign worker living in. There must be more economic options than through the 'social services' who charge the earth and pay carers minimum wage and only allocate maybe half an hour per visit. Most of their time and cost goes on getting from one place to another.
My sister is looking into just this. They ended the payments with just a few weeks notice, though, so we have only just had the first month's bill while we get sorted out.
I would imagine that people will be discouraged from working if they could be at home looking after ageing parents whose care is eroding the family inheritence. Whether this is a good thing is another matter, but homecaring for parents will become more normal, as I believe it is on the continent.

I guess in the old days social care did not exist and families had to look after each other until the older ones died. Maybe dementia and similar conditions were regarded a medical condition and the NHS took over. With modern houses being so small, it is not possible to accommodate and look after the less able. I am waiting for the request "sign this dad, it's really in your best interests" ;)

Considering IHT already takes a hefty 40% of any inheritance to then add an end of life tax is just plain f**king out of order. I'm assuming that to be able to leave anything at all the person will have been paying taxes during they're life anyway, so the Tories plan to take a third bite of the cherry, at least Corbyn's Trotskyism is more honest and the results will be more or less the same. Can't believe the feckwits at central office have come up with this, to hit folk grieving for a loved one with this double tax is so crass as to be almost sociopathic.

I have been thinking about this, and it has huge implications.

Around here it is common for the older farmer to move into a house/bungalow/converted barn on the farm to allow the next generation to continue the farm. If the government gets equity in this, how would that affect the farm as a whole?

If all the houses that would have been passed to relatives have to be sold, this influx of houses on the market will drop the overall price, leaving some in negative equity. This has a knock on effect on land prices.

Who sets the rates and counts up the visits (carers are usually on basic wages but I can bet the rate will be above this!) and how much would this cost? Can it kick in if you have one visit a week for a few months?

I have loads more questions but I will leave you to mull over the above...o_O

If you give your money away for the kids to waste there in no incentive for them to look after you in old age. You will find yourself in a council old folks home while the kids are holidaying in Barbados. I'm keeping my money so I can look after myself.

@Nell would be the one to answer a lot of these, she's an admin for a mental health trust and before that did admin for an home care outfit. It's a toss-up between one of her managers and the council as to who has her reaching for the nurofen and chocolate most.

Theresa May is spinning like heck at the moment on Sky TV press call . Now there is a cap on total care costs ............

Michael Crick is skewering her on how much the cap will be £100k, £200k, £500k, no answer

U-turn on NIC, now an unclear U-turn on this

The Late Mrs T, she is not

You would think they would sort out their policy before publishing it. They will be letting Corbyn in the way things are going.

The Tories are far too complacent in this election. I remember what happened before when a party started celebrating before the election.

Apparently the Cabinet nor the spin doctors knew about this

Clear and simple, it was / will be portrayed as a stealth tax. It wasn't even necessary to mention it. It will hit harder home with core Conservative voters desperate to pass on and help their children on the property ladder.

Absolutely crazy

Am iI wrong? I thought at the moment you are responsible for your care costs if you have over £22K of assetts.
Surely this figure means you are in fact only responsible after the first £100K of assetts

"The lady's not for turning" is definitely not Theresa May:D

Unless she does turn she will not have an overall majority at the election. Although that might be the aim to have a brexit coalition then the tories will not take the whole blame if its a failure. Why else would you shoot yourself in the foot with such a stupid policy.

Arrogance I think. And opportunism - just like stating remain until it was forced out of her

Most of their time and cost goes on getting from one place to another.
A lot of carers don't get paid for their time travelling between clients, only paid for time at the call.
I know of one case where an agency was short staffed for a bank holiday weekend, they brought in staff from another location
The client was in a rural location having 2 carers 4 times a day, this weekend the carers spent the time between calls waiting "down the road" in their car because it wasn't worth them driving home (25 miles) and back again at their own expense

As I understand it, with home care, they look at your assets but do not include your home so you pay if you have savings, other property or investments over £22,000. The new scheme was going to bring the home into the equation for the first time.
I think we are still scuppered as mum kept a share in the buildings so she could have some rental income to boost her pension, and this takes her over the potential thresh-holds although she has no savings.
The whole issue seems to create problems on farms which are often asset rich but cash poor.
