I went to the Herefordshire NFU county meeting last night .
Never been before but Stuart Roberts was the guest speaker . I have got to be fair to him he was very very good . He was ,however, preaching to the converted. I wish that what he said last night was put out by the NFU over their social media systems . It was reassuring to hear of some of the opportunities he has had to give out a positive message to all sorts of organisations......unfortunately because of the inept media dept within the NFU we get to hear very little of it !!

Use of human shite is OK apparently, no need to keep other animals.

This may have had a thread of its own - it should have it's important enough - there was a piece on farming today about worms in soil spread with sludge being thinner than they should, apparently because they are having to digest more soil to account for the micro-plastics in the sludge from clothes washing etc. Think that was the gist of it, only half awake, but if that is true then surely it is being discussed in arable circles ?

I plough over mouse nests 'a plenty, and bury half of them alive when preparing the ground for cropping. Seagulls get the resr.

I would imagine lots more mice, toads, frogs, rabbits etc. die due to my arable cropping than cattle from my beef enterprise.

Stop the inhumane slaughter from growing vegan foods, eat more beef.

Find a stat on how many small mammals get killed to grow 1t of beans vs 500kg of beef. (Beef has 2 x the calories of many other plant based proteins).

I was feeling quite guilty this autumn ploughing, and actually slowing up trying to let the odd mouse escape from the furrow bottom. must be getting soft in my old age. :scratchhead:

whether it's me getting older, but used to go ploughing, in a white cloud of seagulls, ploughed a few in, there were so many, and right behind the moleboards, now, you get a few, mostly at a distance from you, what has happened ? fewer seagulls, or, alternative food supply ?

Message needs to be simple and Concise.. something like;

“British Agriculture - Looking after the environment and feeding the nation”

Then in smaller type the facts.. something like;

Buy British this January and every other month of the year if you want to cut down on food miles and Carbon emissions. Did you know that animal agriculture in the uk has one of the smallest carbon footprints of any form of protein production throughout the planet. Buy eating locally sourced farm reared and field grown produce your not only helping your local farmers, your helping the country’s economy and the environment.

Facts to be checked inserted etc etc...

I’ve not read the full thread but can the jist that people are by and large pee'd off that we’re not being supported or not being seen to be.

I happened to be part of a group where this was something that was raised with ahdb and interestingly they produced some figures to explain that actually things like februdairy gained more hit for vegans than veganuary.

Many thanks for the input, amended version based on those comments below. Have upped the environmental issues, and touched on the follow-the-money theme.

Perhaps most importantly have also included an open invitation for editors to post on here for further info, so all those of you with the scientific nous will need to be on the ball first week of the New Year.

Further suggestions welcome :)

Press Release

The Farming Forum

Embargoed until 1/1/2020

A 2020 vision for food and farming.

Britain's farmers are urging the public to ‘see the bigger picture’ when it comes to the environmental impact of agriculture.

With concerns about the food we should eat at an all-time high, many people are questioning what sort of diet they should follow to protect the environment. In response to these concerns, members of The Farming Forum are offering the following advice:

- The diet that is kindest to the planet is a local one with minimal food miles, so reducing the pollution and congestion associated with the long-distance haulage of food. By eating British you can enjoy a balanced diet, complete with meat and dairy, safe in the knowledge that it has been produced to the highest standards with a minimal carbon footprint.

- Livestock play a crucial role in an environment friendly food system. Cattle and sheep produce natural fertilizer, utilize land on which crops cannot be grown, and turn food not making the grade for human consumption into nutritious meat and milk.

- The highly processed foodstuffs being presented as alternatives to meat and dairy are damaging to the environment at every stage. The production of the raw ingredients involves the destruction of natural ecosystems, the transportation of these ingredients around the planet consumes vast amounts of fuel, and the manufacturing process then consumes yet more fuel and electricity as well as generating a mountain of packaging waste.

- It is important to understand that the money behind many of the industrially produced meat alternatives is coming from international investors with little concern for the environment. Their only motive is profit, to be made through control of the food you eat. As consumers we all have a choice; support these global corporations , or support Britain’s farmers who have a vested interest in maintaining a sustainable environment.

See the bigger picture, and make it your New Year resolution to Eat British for 2020.

Surely a vegan who wants to stop animals being killed for food should also want to stop carnivorous animals eating other animals also

foxes eating rabbits.
birds eating worms
lions eating anything that moves
Etc etc
