On a similar subject, when you see a big chook shed where they have access to the outdoors, you only ever see a few outside at any time.

I wonder if it’s the same few who are out all day every day or whether it’s every chook outside for just a short time each day?

I really ought to have better things to require my brain power.
Probably the same ones that venture out every day. If the chicks haven't had access to " Outdoors " early in life, they aren't interested later on. When we started getting organic poulets it was noticeable how many more went outside. We had one flock where everyone went outside, and the shed was empty.

Similar here in Norfolk,a local free range egg producer seldom has any chickens outside pecking & scratching around even though all areas of the sheds are fully open for the birds to roam onto pasture, strange !!

They are allowed out so that they are free range but not encouraged to go out.

They get a lot of rain there, if they go out 200 cows milked twice a day means 800 cows tramping over the same ground every day, imagine the state of his fields in a wet summer.

I know there are plenty of farmers doing a fantastic job keeping their cows in 24/7 yet I can’t help thinking out at grass is their natural environment, it’s an easy target for the antis
Thing is anyone involved with cows is well aware that the idealists view of cows at pasture is not what happens in reality .
Many days it`s pissing with rain, cold wind, clarty, too hot etc etc.
During a very hot spell a couple of years ago our urban based customers were saying "bet your cows are loving this weather " In fact they were all back in the shed during the middle of the day & went out when it was cooler.
Whenever we have none farming visitors & explain why having the cows at grass for 180 days of the year is not all it`s cracked up to be ( on this farm ) & the benefit of having an airy comfortable cubicle shed available for the cows to come into they "get it"
