As of the 1st July a slight change to the business, it's become incorporated and with it a change of name. Farm machinery sales have not been a part of Farm Equip's business for a number of years and we felt now was the time for a new name to reflect more of what we do, so Countryside Seeds Limited was born.

We still offer friendly service and advice with up to date products at keen prices.

Company History

Farm Equip was launched by myself (Kevin) on the 1st January 1980. Initially selling farm consumables from the back of a yellow transit van.

Over the past few years the business has become almost predominately the sale of seed in its varies guises where it be a single bag of lawn seed to tonnes of grass/cereal seed.

I am in the very lucky position to be a distributor for some of the UK’s leading seed houses which include Barenbrug UK Ltd, DLF Trifolium Ltd, Grainseed Ltd and Soya UK to name a few.

I am more than happy to work with the customer on compiling their own mixture.

More milk with DLF Fiber Energy
High digestibility equals a higher feed intake.

In order to achieve high feed intake, organic matter digestibility of pure grass should be between 78 and 81%.

If there is between 30 and 50% clover in the clovergrass mixture, we need "only" 76-80% digestibility of the organic matter as clover passes more rapidly through the rumen. For this reason you will be able to reach a much higher level of forage quality just by adding clover into your grass mixture.

If we want to understand what affects organic digestibility of grass, we must go to the cellular level and see how the grass plant cells are built.

A plant cell may be divided into cell content and cell wall:

The content of the cell consists mainly of protein, crude fat, starch and sugars, all of which have a constant and high digestibility close to 100%, see table below.

This means that the cell content in general has a constant and high digestibility.

In the cell wall, which consists of β-glucanes, pectines, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, it is quite different.

Pectines and β-glucanes have a high digestibility (100%), while the digestibility of lignin is 0%. The digestibility of cellulose and hemicellulose varies, which means that the digestibility of these components in practice are determent for the overall digestibility of grass.

Hemicellulose and cellulose together with lignin is what we often refer to as the cell wall (Neutral detergent fiber). Summed up, a high digestibility of NDF is synonym with a high digestibility of organic matter. The content of NDF can be determined by lab analysis which is important as digestibility of NDF is calculated from the content of NDF.

The digestibility of cellulose and hemicellulose depends, among other factors, on cutting time, weather and fertilisation, but we have also seen a difference between grass varieties, when they are compared under the same growing conditions.

We test all varieties for feeding quality, and those showing to be high above average concerning digestibility of NDF are marked with our cell wall logo.

Fodder Beet varieties available for 2019 - ENERMAX

Enermax (White Root): An exciting dual purpose variety for both fodder and bio-energy production.

High yielding with a low dirt tare. Enermax has a clean, white, smooth-skinned root and is shallow rooting, resulting in a cleaner end product particularly important for the bio-fuel market.

It has a higher root yield when compared with the well-known and popular variety Magnum. Official variety testing (Denmark 2010 - 2011), has shown that Enermax can produce 21 tonnes/DM/ha from the root only, with the beet tops adding approximately 5 tonnes DM/ha.

Enermax has the additional benefit of being Rhizomania tolerant and so is suitable for growing in the east of the country where sugarbeet is a widely grown crop, as well as in the west and other areas.

Magnum (White Root): Magnum a popular white-root variety which has a consistent root size and reliable high dry matter yields.

It is a very palatable variety, therefore, increasing appetite and dry matter intake in all stock. Higher dry matter fodder beet has been shown to increase milk yield and daily live weight gain. Due to its high dry matter content, it is more frost resistant than other varieties with a high proportion of clean, white root in the ground.

A planned approach to reseeding this year
After an exceptionally dry summer in 2018, many farmers had no choice but to postpone planned reseeding last year. This is likely to mean an increase in reseeding for 2019.

Those that did manage to find a window of opportunity to reseed experienced the benefit from newer swards; as these were the last to burn up and the first to recover following the drought. Reseeding older, underperforming swards is a fundamental practice to gain productivity from grass-based systems.

For farmers where reseeding this spring is high on the agenda; now is a good time to identify what fields should be targeted to get the biggest return on investment from reseeding.

For those with ground under forage crops, these fields will be the obvious starting point. Other fields that should be targeted are those which are producing below average covers on your farm – if you measure grass it is easy to identify which fields these are.
The most obvious fields for reseeding are:

• Fields which have been poached or damaged
• Fields where the quantity of perennial ryegrass is lower than ideal
• Have you noticed an increase in weed content of some fields?
• Do you need to skip some fields as they are not recovering as well in the 21-day rotation

Choosing the best varieties will always be important – for grazing swards, choose late heading varieties, delivering good quality and high seasonal yield. AberGain and AberChoice are the leading late varieties on the Recommended List and Pasture Profit Index (PPI) for the past number of years.

The 2019 PPI will be published over the coming weeks and this will help form the basis for your reseeding decisions in 2019.
