Countryside Seeds Ltd

Countryside Seeds Ltd

As of the 1st July a slight change to the business, it's become incorporated and with it a change of name. Farm machinery sales have not been a part of Farm Equip's business for a number of years and we felt now was the time for a new name to reflect more of what we do, so Countryside Seeds Limited was born.

We still offer friendly service and advice with up to date products at keen prices.

Company History

Farm Equip was launched by myself (Kevin) on the 1st January 1980. Initially selling farm consumables from the back of a yellow transit van.

Over the past few years the business has become almost predominately the sale of seed in its varies guises where it be a single bag of lawn seed to tonnes of grass/cereal seed.

I am in the very lucky position to be a distributor for some of the UK’s leading seed houses which include Barenbrug UK Ltd, DLF Trifolium Ltd, Grainseed Ltd and Soya UK to name a few.

I am more than happy to work with the customer on compiling their own mixture.

To contact me you may PM through the forum or I am very happy to be telephoned on 07881 804442.
Email: [email protected]

As like a lot of you I'm self employed so no 9-5 here so please telephone at your convenience.

Kyros Fodder Beet seed will again be available for the 2017 season.

Pre-ordering is advised to avoid any disappointment.

GetImage.ashx

An ideal Fodder Beet for grazing, with good palatability and high utilisation rates. Kyros is a modern hybrid monogerm cultivar with high quality seed, excellent yield performance, and good feed value.

Kyros is the preferred cultivar where maximum yield of high energy forage is required for grazing, and is suitable for grazing with cattle, sheep and deer.

Farmers have successfully mechanically lifted Kyros when they have not needed to graze their total area.

Yield: 8/9
Grazing Suitability: 9/9
Cleanness of root: 8/9
Root in ground: 3/9
Rust resistance: 7/9
Lifting suitability: 9/9

  • Medium DM% bulb (17%)
  • Very palatable
  • High utilisation
  • Quality monogerm seed
  • Reliable high yields
  • Very smooth root
  • Very clean harvest
  • Easy storage
Characteristics

Kyros has a tankard shaped root, with a medium 16-17% high dry matter content.
Kyros is very resistant to bolting. Kyros gives very high yields of roots with excellent digestibility.
The top has a high sugar content and is easy to store as silage.

Growing Characteristics

Kyros thrives on a wide range of soils providing that they are well drained and not acid. A deep, friable loam is probably the ideal.
Kyros tolerates drought conditions so its potential can be fully exploited on light land in dry areas also.
Compared with other varieties Kyros is exceptionally easy to lift while the roots sit relatively high above the ground and there are few fangs.
Field losses during harvesting are very low.

Organic Spring Barley;

ARMADA
ARMADA Spring Barley is a trusted and loyal variety which was bred in Germany. It is extemely clean and shows outstanding disease resistance to Rynchosporium, Mildew, Yellow and Brown Rust. Yields are competitive as displayed in Independent Agrii trials in 2014.

ARMADA Spring Barley produces bold samples of feed quality grain with very high specific weight. In addition to these outstanding attributes ARMADA produces high straw yields. In TAG Organic Trials, the straw length and yield was 2nd only to Dandy but showed +16% more grain yield.

PROPINO

Propino is a malting variety which was added to the 2010/2011 HGCA Recommended List. It has high treated and untreated yields with excellent malting qualities. Organic C2 Propino seed available for Spring 2017. With its all round characteristics it does sell quick, so ensure your orders are placed early.

Odyssey

Odyssey is a malting type which is fully approved for distilling and provisional 2 approval for Malt. It offers high untreated yields (2% higher than Quench, 5% higher than Westminster, but 1cm shorter than Propino). Propino has a high resistance to Rhynchosporium scoring a 7, which is the highest score of any variety on the list and a 9 for mildew.
Definitely a variety worth looking at.

WESTMINSTER

WESTMINSTER spring barley is a long standing favourite in the organic sector with long, stiff straw. It has excellent all round disease resistance combined with very high specific weight.

Accepted by some end users as a malting barley. However, the combination of relatively long straw and good disease resistance characteristics mean WESTMINSTER is an excellent choice as a feed wheat also.

Evelina Spring Barley

Bred by Austrian plant breeder Saatzucht Edelhof, Evelina spring barley is another exclusive to Cope Seeds. The variety boasts outstanding disease resistance, tall straw with high yields of grain and straw, perfect for the organic farmer with livestock.

Evelina was trialled in Independent Private Trials and whilst achieving competitive yields, it was the earliest variety to mature and achieved the best specific weight of any variety in the trial.

RGT CONQUEST
Bred by RAGT, this variety, narrowly missed getting on the ADHB Recommended List. However we asked RAGT for permission to market the variety as we felt it had a significant place in the organic sector due to its similarity to Westminster. RGT Conquest spring barley is suitable for feed and potentially brewing.

RGT Conquest spring barley is a tall variety, standing only 2cms below Westminster, offers a better disease resistance portfolio and achieves untreated yields of 3% above Westminster.

Cool-Sile Liquid Preservative silage additive - Early order price: £26.85 per 25L drum plus carriage charge.

cool-sile-img.jpg

Coolsile is a liquid preservative (not an inoculant) which is ideal for treating silages which are prone to aerobic spoilage

The preservatives in Coolsile inhibit the growth of moulds and yeasts. Moulds are responsible for producing mycotoxins which can effect animal performance and health. Yeasts are generally the cause of heating in clamps and together with mould increase losses, reduce palatability and lower animal performance Coolsile also inhibits clostridia and listeria which are a particular problem in high dry matter silages. This makes the product particularly suitable for use in haylage bales being fed to sheep and horses.

Coolsile is a combination of feed preservatives Sodium benzoate and Sodium nitrite which is are a safe to use format that will not harm machinery or concrete.

  • Inhibits yeasts
  • Inhibits moulds
  • Inhibits listeria
  • Inhibits clostridia
  • Reduces heating in silage
  • Minimises losses
  • Maximises palatability
  • Treats grass, wholecrop and maize
Trials
The trial below shows the results of a grass silage trial carried out at Malvern. The Coolsile treated silage lasted a week, after opening the silos, without heating but the untreated control was heating from around 1 day. Generally heat is generated in an open silage clamp by the growth of yeasts. Coolsile inhibits yeast growth, hence silage stays cool.

cool-sile-img-1.jpg

Dual Action on Grass
Cool sile can be used in combination with Sure Sile Fructan (@1/4 rate) on grass to give the benefits of both products. The Sure Sile Fructan controls fermentation bringing down the pH quickly and saving nutrients. The Coolsile ensures that the silage stays cool during feed-out to maximise animal performance.

Usage
Coolsile is available in 25, 200 and 1000 litre containers.
Use 0.75 litres per tonne for grass or maize
Use 1.0 litres tonne for wholecrop
Coolsile can be applied neat or diluted with water.

Use more Coolsile on areas where heating is likely to be an issue, ie on shoulders, the ramp and on summer fed material

DLF Breeder's Corner - red clover
What can you expect from our future red clover varieties? We asked our plant breeder, Libor Jalûvka, to explain the progress of our red clover development programme that takes place at our breeding station in the Czech Republic.

Trials_with_red_clover_711.jpg

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L) is the most useful perennial legume cultivated in central and northern Europe. Red clover is tolerant of shallow, acid and wet soils, and it performs very well when grown in partnership with grasses.

As a result, farmers are growing more red clover. In sustainable grassland systems, red clover raises drymatter yields and improves forage quality without the need for added nitrogen. The one factor that hampers wider use in permanent grassland is red clovers relatively short longevity, a feature that is closely related to disease resistance.

Farmers traditionally harvest red clover based stands three times a year. Change is coming as animal performance continues to rise, and climate change extends the growing season. In some parts of Europe, it is common to see four and sometimes five cuts a year.

DLF breeding programme

Red_clover_250.jpg

Our breeding programme has six goals. They are:

  • To increase persistence, which is equivalent to increasing disease resistance
  • To increase dry-matter yield
  • To improve resistance to diseases such as Anthracnose, Sclerotinia and Fusarium
  • To improve compatibility with grasses in seed mixtures
  • To develop later-flowering varieties
  • To reduce protein degradation

Lofa, Fojtan, Mahulens, Perseus & Perun Advanced™ Grasses a recap.

Advanced™ Grasses are created by crossing fescues with ryegrasses. The objective of this Advanced™ hybrid breeding is to create grass varieties with high forage quality combined with good persistence, stress tolerance and disease resistance.

Yield increases of between 10% and 50% are common when DLF varieties of Advanced™ Grasses are tested in trials.

Why are Advanced™ Grasses so successful?

Intensive breeding for more than 40 years

Greater tolerance to variations in climate, soil management etc.
Yield improvement from crossing of two non-related species
Development of types and varieties with different characters

FOJTAN and MAHULENA (Tall Fescue) are suitable for silage mixtures together with perennial ryegrass, hybrid ryegrass and lucerne or red clover. The Advanced™ Tall Fescue increases the persistency of the mixture due to the deeper root system and tolerance to dry conditions. They also show excellent forage quality.

The varieties PERSEUS and PERUN (Italian Ryegrass) have all the attributes of an Italian ryegrass but exhibit improved persistence and stress tolerance. They are ideal in short term mixtures of up to 3 years’ duration and are especially good companions for red clover.

The variety LOFA (Hybrid Ryegrass) has the broadest appeal of all Advanced™ Grasses. It has all the attributes of a hybrid ryegrass but exhibits improved persistence and stress tolerance over standard hybrid ryegrass varieties. These characteristics make Lofa an ideal component in medium term mixtures as its persistence, being similar to standard hybrid ryegrass, matches the expected duration of the vast majority of medium term mixtures currently used in the UK.

New for 2017 Becva (Festulolium), the result of an Italian ryegrass crossed with a tall fescue and backcrossed several times to the Italian parent. The result is an appearance like an Italian ryegrass with improved characteristics. Very high DM yield +8% higher dry matter production was the result of the official Czech testing, compared to the Italian ryegrass standard variety LOLITA.

Top forage quality with a good disease resistance (rusts) and a high sugar content, BECVA produces forage of very high nutritional quality.
