I’m planning on westerwolds or hybrid rye. To graze over winter and then get an early cut before maize.

But I’m in Devon

As Jim says I broadcast 200 acres of various mixtures a fortnight ago. The micro climate under the crop seems to get them going. Stubble neeps are growing but can only spread 22m. vetch is growing as well as oil radish as is the mustard. Its been too dry for the oats and peas to make a start but after Haar for a couple of days and rain this week they will be away. My experience of drilling at the end of August is you don't get much of a crop 3 out of 4 years.
Last year 30 acres oats and oil radish gave my 250 ewes 28 days of feeding in January February but that will not be normal as due to poorer yields we had more soil N left than normal as well as a very mild winter up until that time. Oats and vetch less successful but enough to try again. The peas are there as an experiment as last year they were self seeded after combining and were fixing nitrogen in DD by October and survived until the weather went cold in February.

Pics below of stubble Neeps making a start and Oilradish broadcast @20kg/ha and oats @60kg/ha grazed 28th January ish
