Cover crop costs ?

Why not volunteers and weeds not annihilated by herbicides in growing crop cost bugger all.

I think you are probably right. I mentioned this on another thread before we became part of this forum, that I didn't think a forage brassica crop was that harmful to soil micro funghi because the weeds provided diversity. Certainly there was a good mix of weeds in my forage rape that was sprayed off and DD into an old ley that didn't have a significant impact on the crop. Not sure how many weeds I am going to get in stubbles though in comparison to an ex ley? Suppose it depends on the seed bank in the soil and how much disturbance I get from the drill.

Do many people spin a cover crop onto a standing wheat crop before harvest? If so what do you plant and at what date?
We have tried it on several occasions with little success...when its dry the seed does not germinate...and in the wet anything that grew was eaten by slugs...This was with Mustard, clover and vetches.. Although it would not give you the time advantage autocasting on the combine header might be a better option as you could apply slug pellets and harrow or roll soon afterwards..
