Has anyone else on the forum been invited to do a voluntary test? Chosen at random, testing being done by home kit by Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI on behalf of DHSC. I think i will do mine.It just tells you if you have it or not,but no antibody test.I think they are trying to link up a nose and throat swab test,to a simple saliva test.

No but I was with a niece yesterday who knows someone that works at Addenbrookes hospital.
said that hospital staff are not bothering to test as test only 40% reliable.
Now don’t shoot the messenger but I was shocked by that statement.
Not sure the test is unreliable rather the obtaining of a good sample, I know a few people who have had it and it's not pleasant, some wont allow the swabs pushed far enough

Chap at the yard has been selected at random, said it all arrived via courier and he's to do the swabs etc and then dispatched asap after doing them. He was unsure if he was going to do it as aged and pretty much been locked down/in his little bubble. Will ask him when I next see him if he's done it

Sound an interesting bit of work. I take it the kit you have been sent contains both the saliva test and a swab test.

If you have definitely had the disease and recovered from it you need to be contacting the convalescent plasma trial as they are looking for blood samples from you.

My daughter had the random test come through last week. She did the swabs, but tbh I doubt she pushed it far enough in her throat or nose. I’ve heard it’s not nice at all, why can’t they develop an easier test?

My wife had one about a fortnight ago. It is not that nice to do as it involves forcing the swab against the natural desire to gag. If done properly I understand it is fairly reliable.
However any test for the virus will only give a statement of that days status.
The only really valuable test is an antibody test, to tell if you have had the disease and that requires blood

I know a family that has been tested - mother and father.

The mother has leukemia (I think) and is in long term care going to hospital regularly.

One of them had the anti body test which took 15 mins for a result the other had to send off a Covid-19 blood sample.

Yes, I had a letter. I'm so fed up with the whole business I'm not doing it. Speaking to a friend who is working on the vaccine, he says random antigen testing is fairly useless as it only gives an indication how many people have the virus at one given time, and by the time the test results are through anyone who tested negative could have subsequently caught it. He also says that even if you do the test correctly at home, pushing the swabs far enough down your throat and up into your nose so your eyes water, it's only 80% reliable.

If I'd been asked at the start of the lockdown I'd have done it but since then we've had the goverment and people in leadership positions u-turning and not sticking to their own rule; the police telling off dog-walkers for breaching lockdown but allowing mass protests to go ahead; people screwing the self-employed grant and furlough scheme. I've worked throughout the lockdown, doing my best not to catch or spread the virus and I shall continue to do that but that's as far as I'm prepared to go.
