Cow catcher crate

Got a quote for one 😅. Those of you using a catcher on a loader, how much do you catch them with the front opening gates, or are you lowering the crate over them more often? If the front gate isn't needed, 4 large gates and a head yolk it'll be.....
Thanks

Great piece of kit.
wouldn’t be without mine. Use the opening gates mostly, especially when picking fat cattle out of large pens on my own.
Is it possible to catch them by lowering it over them? I only really need one for catching grazing youngstock to treat bad eyes etc.

Depends on how quiet your cattle are. When catching stuff in a field it’s best to put a bit of feed on the floor just inside the catcher with the gates open, sit on the handler seat and wait for the opportunity.
if you’re just dropping the whole thing over without opening the gate, you’re most likely to spook them.

We have one that I got made up using an old linkage mounted small bale grab as a base.
our one opens but I have used it both ways and its useful to be able to do that.
ours started of as linkage mounted but I soon put it on the loader and that was a good idea not least because its now on the tractor that feeds them so they are more easy around it.
soon found out its no good to chase them just dilly around and wait for your opportunity, patience in this case is the name of the game.
I had ours made with big'ish bars and nicely rounded ends to the gates so if I do knock a cow its less likely to hurt them.
we have a head yoke in one side at the back of the catcher and a short gate mounted by it so you can use the gate to help get the cow in the yoke and with it shut it forms a sort of crush,
we have used it for allsorts from doing eyes to AI'ing cows, I have opened it up to block the road so I could move cows on my own, useful bit of kit

I made one the same out of a bale squeezer,I presume that's what the original was based on as identical, I shall get a photo of it sometime when I am next by it ,

I made one from gates, box metal and scaffolding poles and clamps. Slightly tapered in shape. Managed to drop it down over neighbour’s bull when it got in with our cows. Backed cattle box up and loaded it away. Used to sometimes use as mobile calving pen in shed too. Found it worked best dropping it down over animal.

Local contractor made one for a customer a good few years ago. I managed to get it for £800 when he sold up a couple years ago. Wouldn’t be without it now even if it’s only used once or twice a year. Some days it’s easy to catch what your after, other days less so….

Here's the one I made, not quite so tidy but still worked, open to offers as no longer used now the suckers have gone and we have a mobile race
