I have an Angus x dairy cow that has lost condition, was salavating a bit. I pressumed wooden tongue and treated with pen strep . Cow now has runny nose with blood through it. She coughs a bit too. Dosed few weeks ago for fluke and worms. Any clues ?

Cattle dying left right and centre if you don’t get onto it quick. Anti inflammatory and antibiotic and an intranasal vaccination for every other beast on the farm. Do it now.
That bad ? Will get this one put down in morning she is isolated from rest. This particular beast was bought in asa calf so not home bred. Would it likely be carrying it?

I wouldn’t go off vaccinating everything just yet. It doesn’t really sound like IBR and if it’s just one animal in the herd that has been sick for a few weeks then it’s an individual animal issue. From what you describe she probably has an abscess somewhere. Drooling and bloody discharge could be a tooth issue with concurrent sinusitis. It it could be a lung abscess which has burst through a blood vessel, which may explain the coughing. Hard to say without seeing her.

Think my plan is to just get her put down ASAP and monitor the rest closely

Totally agree with this, I had one the same started coughing up a bit of blood, snotty nose bit of blood, then one day I was stood by her and she coughed, the abscess in her lungs must have burst and she haemorrhaged and bled to death in front of me, felt and was completely helpless, wasn't nice.

I've seen similar too.bit of blood coming out the nose.brought her in .next thing it was flowing out of her an bled to death in minutes.

IBR the beast would have all the symptoms of pneumonia.if really bad would have green stinking snot hanging like Icicle's hanging from it.plus more animals would be ill especially calves.

What a bad OP, especially on a forum open to the public!

Sick animal, no Vet intervention, owner makes a (probably) erroneous diagnosis, treats with AB's, animal still ill, so owner asks people who haven't even see the animal for advice.

And farmers ask why the public wants fewer subsidies and higher welfare standards.

I had sought vet's advice, he told me there was nothing to be done, and had advised me to get gone as soon as possible, just she was a nice cow and I wasn't quick enough.

No one else who looks on here has any idea how you farm either! Any "civilian" reading your OP would question why, let alone how you farm.

I would say posts like yours which can be seen by any vegan, vegetarian PETA supporter or member of the public who cares to log into a public forum, "spoil it" for responsible livestock keepers because it looks like you'd rather let an animal suffer over a period of time (long enough to lose condition) make a "guess" at diagnosis, use AB's irresponsibly and seem to be unable or unwilling to even phone a vet, let alone ask for a visit.

If you looked after a dog to the same standard, and wrote to the local paper asking for advice, I would expect you to , quite rightly, end up in Court.

BTW, I am not any sort of animal rights "nut" but a farmer and livestock keeper of over 50 years standing

I’m not the type of person to phone a vet for every little thing.the cow in question was always a small lean type as she is very much dairy bred so wasn’t to obvious she had lost condition . Continuing to eat every day. We have had couple cases of wooden tongue in cows this year , vet diagnosed both times I might add!! Hence this one had same symptoms so pretty sure every other person would have gone ahead and treated the same as before without pestering the vet !! It only started showing the symptoms of the blood out the nose couple of days later ! This all has happened within days of it first noticed wasn’t right so has not gone on for ages suffering as u seem to think I have done . I’m sure we have all miss diagnosed an illness in an animal in our time Christ even doctors and nurses miss diagnose in humans !! It’s called nobody is perfect unlike ure self with ure 50 years experience!! For ure information not that it’s anything to do with u anyway the vet came out this morning examined the cow he didn’t think was IBR but took blood to send off . Blood in dung now too. Thinks something is badly wrong inside of it and subsequently put the animal down.his words not mine whatever has happened to cow has came over it very quickly.

It's the style and tone of your post that's the biggest problem. In the eyes of the public it's "farmer has sick animal, does't call a vet, doses with AB, no improvement, asks internet for advice*

With posts like that in the public domain, it's no wonder farming is getting slated.
