Cows coughing.

Its now 3 weeks since we wormed the cows because of coughing, the coughing defiantly tailed off a lot for a week to 10 days but has increased a lot again. Starting to wonder what is going on

Failure of the treatment with wormer? Poor application?
Reinfection with lungworm?
Something else?

Will take a bulk milk sample for IBR testing in the morning, we think we are IBR free , but still vaccinate.
Will also talk to vet.

Seems ridiculous to retreat with wormer (Eprizero ) but ??
When was the last time you vaccinated for ibr?

March , doing them every 6 months, with marker vaccine.
Did individual milk tests for IBR from every cow a year ago that showed us clear , young stock at 9 months old blood tested clear for several years before the first vaccination. Going to take a bulk tank sample this morning just in case IBR has arrived from somewhere.

Has your vet not mentioned Fog Fever? We had the same problems in our sucklers a few years ago after turning them onto aftermaths. Started with odd cow coughing then more and calves also started coughing. like you we thought it was lungworm but vet said fog fever. We put them back onto bare pasture with just straw to eat and jabbed any coughing ones with alamycin. They also went very lethargic after starting coughing. After being jabbed they recovered in a few days. We did let them back into the aftermaths a few week later with plenty of good straw to eat and they were fine then. The vet said it was something to do with the weather conditions at the time that somehow poisened the grass.

From the Eprizero leaflet.

Persistent ActivityEprizero (eprinomectin) Pour-On for Beef and Dairy Cattle has been proved to effectively control infections and to protect cattle from re-infection with Dictyocaulus viviparus for 21 days after treatment and Haematobia irritans for 7 days after treatment.

I think there are too many coughing for it to be cows that were not treated properly to be the issue so IBR or some other infection seems far more likely than re infection with lungworm.

Taken the milk samples in to vets for IBR testing to be told that my experience is common this year.
A fair proportion of farms having to re-treat for lungworm irrespective of make of pour on used.

If it was lungworm the coughing will get worse after treatment as they cough up the remains unless the wormer did not work. Do they have high temperature as that would be the case with IBR?

When we had lungworm seven years ago we had to treat twice to properly crack it. Did you weigh your cows, or guess? I guessed the weight, wasn't at all happy that I had got it right, whether it had any bearing, I don't know.

They were treated on barren sale weights , the coughing defiantly subsided to almost zero after first treatment, then suddenly escalated over the last week , now 24 days from first treatment. Treating again this morning.
