What I found - was not the pain issue (I fortunately have a high pain threshold), it is the shape the bones healed for me. I have knuckles on my ribs now, where I was overdoing things and the ribs healed in a funny alignement

All quacks / hospitals say 3 weeks etc to cover the people whom are not very good at coping - but you will know yourself what is right or wrong for your body.
The issue to be concerned with is if the rib frcture / breaks can pierce the lung - then you are in for a world of more pain as they cut you open to insert a drain into your chest cavity to help your lung reinflate...not pleasant..

Went for walk today but still in pain

Long story short, met a man in plastic surgery waiting room, he fell down stairs after a night on the sauce, a and e diagnosed broken ribs patched him up and sent him on his way. Back to desk work 2 weeks later but couldn't hold a pen or work a keyboard, turns out he had a broken wrist an arm, didn't know because ribs were sorer and painkillers masked the pain.

Feel for you with broken ribs, get things checked out properly.
