Crane on a Fert Spinner?

Thinking out loud...

I've no experience of a fertiliser spinner crane, but I recon it would be handy for what I need.

Question is, would my little tractor handle it? Top dress tractor of choice is usually a DB 996 or 1294.

I guess that the crane would have to be on the floor to raise the bag, otherwise the tractors nose would go skyward, or some hydraulic linkage overload may occur?

Who here has one, and would it work for me on a tiddly tractor?

Thank You!

I have one, a Kuhn Levsak on a JD 6620/vicon rotaflow combination. A very good crane, strong and capable of handling a 600kg spreader with over 2500kg of fert in it, but it pushes the spreader back about a foot or so, obviously increasing lift effort and front end lightness. I would say it will be trial and error as to what will work for you, some cranes are lighter and have much less offset. What spreader are you working with and how much fert do you carry?

We have a richford crane on a amazone zam .picking bags off trailer requires mixture of crane use and hydraulic lift use as you need on ours to lower spreader to see what you are doing when hooking up bag. You do not need to put any extra weight on linkage as bags you lift only go in spreader anyway

Too heavy for 996
Too much front weight needed which is dangerous on hills

Have used a crane with a good number of years. Our land is scattered and we only have one tractor so I find it invaluable.
You’d definitely need a 4wd tractor and I’d imagine 100hp.
Cashel engineering do a relatively light weight crane over here (southern Ireland) as do Rossmore engineering. For spreaders of 2tn capacity plus I’d go for a heavier crane like the Kuhn mentioned above or a Bogballe crane (which we now use).

Very impressed with the Bogballe crane. It can handle at least a 2.5tn spreader and has a lift capacity of 1.3tn, it allows me to lift 2x500kg bags at a time which speeds up the job.

Cranes do push the weight back a bit though as others have mentioned.

Doesn't the cashel one just lift 500kg extended?
