Crap internet!!!

Yes EE which is on top of the costs below.

It cost around £900 installed, or £33/ month for 3 years to lease from the local agent https://www.wellwoodcommunications....ng-rural-broadband-at-the-royal-highland-show . They use MikroTik equipment, https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mikrotik-R...rotik+antenna&qid=1568199937&s=gateway&sr=8-3 and https://www.amazon.co.uk/MikroTik-R...S030FM849VB&psc=1&refRID=D4AN44YMFS030FM849VB if you want to do it yourself, it doesn't look too difficult but I wanted the backup which seems good.
Yeah I’m installing some MikroTik gear for a network link at my place - CCTV, video gate intercom which is too much hassle to run a fibre for - it’s about 700m away from the house. So I’m aware of their stuff, and actually using those 60 Gig dishes (see photos further up the thread) which are pretty impressive - private link all setup to go out of the box and a 2000 Mbps speeds.

Their gear seems pretty reasonable quality (it’s all developed/made in Eastern Europe) and good bang for the buck. I have purchased from several larger distributors here.

I would be interested to know how your combo antenna/router stands up to all weathers etc in the fullness of time.

Hi PS

Just being nosey, but is It and Comms your line of work or a hobby, because reading your posts, you have a great deal of expertise in this field?

Also, excluding kit (as that can be influenced by your choice of brand etc) is 4g cost effective if you want to use a lot of data (Streaming TV, Music etc for multiple users in the house), even extending to allow potential home let's jump on the system, as we are currently looking at a property that has max 7meg download, which is far too slow for us?

Yeah cost effectiveness is difficult to answer without knowing how much data on average you are consuming a month. It’s easy to eat a lot of data if there are lots of streaming users in the house. I used to run multiple 4G sims and flip over from one to the other as the data ran out. Now just keep one running as backup for fibre.

As you probably know 4G is (still mostly) a metered broadband connection, though there are some uncapped plans out there. Some folks on here are using Three unlimited plans and claim good service and Virgin do an unlimited data plan if you're an existing copper broadband customer (useless to most of us in the stix). I’ve also had opportunity to use the new Vodafone 5G service on their GigaCube router which is totally uncapped for £50 pcm but the coverage is really, really limited at the moment, the download speed is impressive but upload speed is a bit rubbish.

Have you considered or investigated if there are any rural wireless, so called WISP, broadband providers where you are? You can often get pretty impressive speeds from rural wireless and ping times are good and bundle/package prices usually better value than 4G broadband from the majors.

Avoid satellite broadband at all costs.

Hi, Not sure if you have already checked this out but there are many wireless broadband internet providers out there now, near us in Yorkshire I know of 3 or 4. they can get broadband to more places than BT when it comes to rural communities.

There is also a grant up for grabs on it too!! £350

see if your eligable here https://basicbroadband.culture.gov.uk/

Hope you get it sorted!

I'm in the middle of nowhere but in one rooms window we get a strong 4g signal on EE. So i ran 2 external 4g antenna outside the window and set up 2 4g ee internet boxes. Unlimited data for about £35 on each. Then those two go into another box to join the two networks then into a router. We now get around 60 mbs which is pretty awesome. especially since we'd only have 1mbs on the phone line.

I got this on the monthly plan: https://shop.ee.co.uk/dongles/pay-monthly-mobile-broadband/4gee-router/details

Then upgraded the sim to this:

Used this antenna:

That should sort internet and wifi. however if your house is fairly big you may want to turn the wifi off on the ee box and wire it up into a wifi router for a better wifi signal.

Hope that helps. :)

Bit late in the day with this but just taken the plunge and kicked the broadband landline into touch as its useless especially when it rains. Now 4G with EE as we only surf we thought 30GB for 12 quid a month is reasonable. Very inpressed with the speed.

Final update, we installed 4g receiver 200 m up the hill above the farm and a line of sight set up to send it to the house powered by digging an armoured electric feed from the farm. Total cost was £1700 but we have gone from 0.6 to 36 and our internet is brilliant. Transformed the kids options with Xbox, Netflix etc. Unlimited 4g sim Fromm EE is 28/ month and you can send data from it to any of the family phones.
The only downside has been bt who won’t let us out of our broadband contract as legally they only have to supply 0.2mb .......barstewards so when the contract is up they will lose everything including the business phones.

Did they write that guaranteed minimum speed on your contract?

Yep your right, was thinking of speaking to our mp and the ombudsman, probably do no good but if you don’t do anything then you will always get screwed.
Send them an email saying your going to the ombudsman they realy dont like that. How they think it’s acceptable to charge you for 0.2mb when joe bloggs in the town gets 20mb for the same price.
