Clive, veenhuis rotamax is worth a look. Not cheap though, but interesting.
Agree with that it is a bit odd that you say you should turn off a tractor when you get out, and now letting the tractor drive itself while you are not in it.... zelotic views yada yada yada whatever.
Think a company makes a umbilical system with a reeler and arm to pick up and put down in each row

Great minds

VERY silly idea (but that’s what forums are for) ..........

could you use a sprayer fed water by an umbilical system to irrigate crops ?

36m going as slow as possible (so extremely slow on cvt ) on auto steer so you could take the man out the cab with runs taking hours to complete just supervise (maybe not legal even ! ? )

umbilical system pumping water to the sprayer filling it as fast as it empties ?

utterly crazy idea and cost also probably crazy and unviable but could it work ?
Stupid idea, totally against all HSE rules having a man getting out of a moving tractor with the engine running. having read your posts on another thread on the subject I’m surprised your even considering it!

will last nights rain that most seem to have had and that forecast over the weekend not be enough to keep it ticking over?
You really haven't a clue have you? Those that did get rain last night, most sound like they only got a few mm which will have dried up by now. By the looks of the radar I saw if you drew a horizontal line across the country around Birmingham sort of level nobody south of that got anything. Most people need double figure mm's of rain over a few days to make any sort of difference.

Do you need to put on that rate of water ?

Drip irrigation is used where water is in short supply.

Don't apply during the heat of the day (Pointless).

I would have thought an IBC with very small pipes would work .. turn on at about 1am turn off at 5am ??? Cheap to install, fill etc.

Thought about it but not done it of course.

Huge manpower required for 1,000s of acres.

Doing nicely to the north of you Boss ?

South of Birmingham = bottom quarter of the country, at a rough estimate, albeit more productive for arable, seemed more important by those who live there and a horrid mass of conurbation by those who don’t.

How much did you get yesterday/overnight? Seeing very little evidence from posts across the forum of many people getting more than a fairly useless few mm. Odd post saying 10-20mm.
Wouldn't say its any more important than further North but its just how Bossfarmer assumes most people have had rain because his front door step is wet when more like over a third of the country will have had nothing again.

Apart from Wednesday, I think I've had a shower every day for the last fortnight. Really heavy for a while on the 9th and had to pull over as the landy wipers couldn't cope. The ground is not soft to walk on, but neither is it a dustbowl.

....... a supervised cvt tractor moving without a man on the seat........
I like this idea, quite happy to supervise a tractor, as long as I can do it from a comfy chair. .....

Maybe some air conditioning for hot days,

And a heater for cold ones,

And any controls needed close by too,

And a radio, definately need a radio.........

I wonder if there will ever be such a thing?

Lots of ground south of you didn't get any. Remember the geographical centre of Britain is Haltwhistle on Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. @Highland Mule summed it up nicely;

"South of Birmingham = bottom quarter of the country, at a rough estimate, albeit more productive for arable, seemed more important by those who live there and a horrid mass of conurbation by those who don’t."
