My parents had a mysterious present left on their porch. It was unlabeled and had no card attached, but assumed it was from a farm shop customer or camp site guest, so bought it along to ours yesterday to open with the family.

It turned out to be a copy of this:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/jun/28/wilding-isabella-tree-review-farm-return-nature

A strange paperback about rewilding a farm!?!

We assume this was supposed to be a message or some sort of joke from a neighbour. (Given the subject matter we have agood idea who sent it)

But why? We are a small family run mixed and diversified farm, hardly a candidate or target for rewilding. I'm not going to get over-dramatic and claim that it spoiled our Christmas because it didn't. But the moment we opened it and realised what it was, you could feel the foreboding in the room. Also trying to explain to my daughter what it was, why we had been sent it and why it when straight in the bin took the shine off the day somewhat.

Someone needs to offset carbon so the senders can continue running their SUVs and having foreign holidays!

Burn it on the front lawn and dance naked round it with a tin foil hat on!

Were the native beech woods that used to cover a lot of the land any better than a monoculture? We have about 2000 acres of woods next to us. There is wildlife diversity up the rides but try walking into the dense woodland itself if you even can. Its very dark and the soil is deep in leaf litter or pine needles. It's dark, silent and other than fungi, pretty devoid of life. A great place to get lost and sit and contemplate though.

I reckon sympathetic farming, in its many different forms, can be just as beneficial for the environment, never mind the fact it actually feeds people which a surprising number of people seem to dismiss nowadays.

I think we are in for radical change though. All very well to sit here saying it. But the daily round of keeping a small business afloat tends to take priority over reshaping the global economy. Steady as she goes. Small improvements a step at a time.
