Maybe I should become a cattle contractor with decent mobile handling kit for the likes of them and do fencing work for them in the Winter
Maybe you should, I think there will be a half decent demand for this kind of work into the future. Lets face it, the charities wouldn't have a clue where to start.

It's bonkers really, but I refuse to play their games any more and I'm firmly of the opinion that the more of us treat these changes with the contempt they deserve by opting out, the better the chance for change.

Like the NFU, change from within in futile.

What puts me off ( a bit like horse people and dog show people ) is the dealing with the human contacts in these organisations ; the actual practical bit no problem

You find either they are clueless or there's always an agenda

As I have said before, with the international agricultural markets as they are today, it is time to bin off deathra and their schemes. As at least one forum member has highlighted, the ministry can't be trusted not to change their tune and the money is fools gold anyway. Diversify, streamline or rent it all out, whatever. I'd do anything to avoid being behest to the government for anything as the political winds will change no doubt.
Sadly most do anything to be tied to the fools gold .

That is fine, you do what any other business does when dealing with any branch of government. You draw up a contract detailing exactly how the work will be done and when and charge them big for any and all deviations they make from it.

In my case it just wasn't worth it for 10 acres of grazing which was mostly bracken and ticks.

It can be done though and the ones who are savvy enough will likely manipulate the situations to suit their systems. All power to them.

Subsidy gives all a reason to pull our market price down , a pot of money supplies think they can overcharge to get. I am a small farmer and believe the we have to aim above this strings attached money, let's face it if you get to involved with these scheme's now the only outcome is your running a poorly paid government nature reserve. Which is designated as such for ever more,Many will be retire ING anyway over ext few years, I think supply of farm produce will go into decline, and prices go up.They are building on land everywhere, farms being destroyed for leisure every farm sale, weather unpredictable all over world, It can only go one way,

What we need is reform :

Assist High Street and other retailers (eg online) to compete with supermarkets
Reverse the decline in small abattoirs
End the OTM scheme

The beef and lambs prices are currently as high in butchers as the puplic are willing/able to pay, the price would need to be far higher and infact unaffordable to replace subsidies and allow farmers to continue profitably
