Critiquing the New Defender

A thread I can’t get banned from by the JLR publicity machine. Here are my pros and cons.

Pros

I like the looks
Comfort
Should be better for towing at speed
More spacious in front

Cons

Need negative interest rates to afford
When will we ever get to see one
Commercial wait times
No electric version
Don’t want to dent the thing like you could the old one
Depreciation will be massive
Probably not a place for sheep ?

Result. I’ll probably buy a 90 in 2024 and keep for a long time (because I still want one).

What are your pros and cons?

not mad on the looks but it’s “ok” and will probably grow on me in time

Too expensive, i simply don’t understand how it fits in the range - it’s competition is other JRL cars ....... crazy ??

no full EV. or longer range hybrid option

Commercial should have launched first

Depreciation will be epic ! anyone who really wants one just wait a few months for cheap used ones or big dealer discounts

other than the above it’s great !

Hang on a cotton picking ...

How can you say it’s comfortable and that you like the looks yet then go on to say “when will we ever get to see one”

Small points

I know nothing about that vehicle but if one is in the market for such a thing what is the competition like? Do Toyota (it’s good enough for ISIS and the Taliban) or other makers have comparable vehicles?

Because I like the look from pictures and videos.

The new model comes with creature comforts. It’s in the spec. I haven’t sat in one to know if it’s actually comfortable. But they look like the seats from the new discovery. And that is well comfy.

They still do the land cruiser range. Not sure it would be my pick:

‘‘Twas only yanking your chain. I spend hours perving videos

(Although I have noted you explicitly ignored the word I put in bold ...)

I'm sure it will be technically brilliant but the reality is it isn't a replacement for the traditional farmer's Defender. More will be driven round London than to the all the livestock markets in the country.

Although further from the market, possibly never to appear, I think the Ineos Grenadier will be a modern design of Defender with the traditional underpinnings of coil sprung live axles holding up a body on ladder chassis. Even then I doubt they will ever offer the range of body types Land Rover used to. Other than a non commercial (under UK legislation) station wagon most likely body will be a utility wagon and hopefully a double cab pickup.

How do they come up with them prices for something that’s quite basic.... I bet a 3 door commercial is still 30k o_O

I’d love one but I wouldn’t pay anywhere near that

That "basic" one is £30+vat list. I would bet you can get a good discount from that. I've never sat in a new one, so have no idea what the spec is like.

Why would you release the commercial version first??

They want to sell these in Chelsea, not to SWEB!

if they did sell them to Chelsea it will only be because that customer did buy a spirt, velar or vouge instead ............... kind of a flawed business model IMO

at least the commercial version doesnt compete with anything they currently sell

They aren't interested in farmers and landscape gardeners! They want to sell to wannabes who buy spray on mud. You won't see one greenlaning they are too frightened the hedge will scratch their clear coat on a car that cost 50K!
