Crop establishment prices

I think some people are going mad. Fertilisers through the roof. Crop gross margins are falling yet I’m seeing people out with ploughs, power harrows, disc/tine combinations, presses. They are burning thousands of litres of fuel and the wearing metal cost must be terrible.
I’ve seen one local guy, subsoil then run a sumo trio, then two passes with a press, before vaderstad drilling then rolling. It’s Sandy loam soil and now looks like the Sahara desert.

Never underestimate the enjoyment factor of farming. Arable farmers have had a boring wet couple of years it’s nice to get out and burn some fuel in the sunshine

Well sown is half grown remember and it could be argued that with margins getting tighter it's even more important to get every acre performing to it's very best. Also a lot of damage has been done to soils this last couple of years so now is a perfect time to remedy that.

It’s so hard here we can’t get a subsoiler in the ground so have given up. 0.5 inches of rain since early august.

No point doing a pi55 poor job of getting a crop up and growing. With the cost of inputs you’ll want every possible angle covered. Seen many a crop not preform to its best because “ we didn’t have that in our budget” but look at my new pickup.

Yep it’s all looking great

If you’ve been in farming long enough you’ve probably see similar circumstances that look hopeless Yet farms still carry on. Some get discouraged and quit some can’t financially continue but someone takes that farm on and makes a living from it. I must admit I’m glad I don’t have to deal with the rules and regulations there now. Sad to see that Britain was once at the forefront of agriculture and was encouraged to produce more back in the 50s and 60s.
now the government want to use generations of hard graft to suck up to the rest of the world with buy One get one free carbon credit . Talk about back stabbing barstools
