New equipment for the X40+ and X50+ Sulky spreader range to debut

Sulky.jpg

SULKY UK will showcase two new options for its X40+ and X50+ fertiliser spreaders at CropTec: a remotely operated rolling cover which simplifies loading operations; and a hydraulically operated border deflector that gives added protection to field margins.
This latest equipment is available as optional extras to further enhance the performance of Sulky’s X40+ and X50+ spreader ranges, and make life easier for the operator.

The new hydraulically-operated rolling action cover can be deployed remotely from the tractor cab, simplifying loading operations which is particularly useful when working without assistance
The new border deflector supports spreading from the very edge of the field, with the flow shutter closed on the border side. The new deflector improves border-controlled spreading, and enhances Sulky’s TRIBORD 3D border device which allows remote changes to fertiliser rates when spreading up to and onto headlands.

Sulky has also improved the compatibility of its ISOBUS controlled equipment to include universal terminals from Case IH (AFS), New Holland Agriculture (Intelliview IV) and Trimble (CFX). All X40+ and X50+ spreaders are available with ISOBUS, so section control and rate adjustment functions will now be compatible with most existing terminals, improving efficiency and reducing the number of screens required in-cab.

Single nozzle switching achieves accuracy

Knight Farm Machinery is introducing a new individual nozzle switching system that virtually eliminates the risk of over-application or misses when applying both crop protection products and liquid fertilizer.
The system combines Knight’s SPRAYER-Controller with a communication module and a series of pneumatic Muller EDS modules.
Knightboom&Mullerunit.JPG

Each module controls four single, two double or one quadruple nozzle holder, and is capable of switching each of them on or off in sequence as they reach ‘over-lap’ or the field boundary.
The EDS modules are simply attached to the spray line along the boom and electronically connected in series. They are connected to the nozzle holders via a 6mm diameter airline.

When combined with GPS control and Knight’s Maximiser system, this will enable users to achieve total efficiency and accuracy when matching spray or fertiliser bouts, which will avoid over/under application and misses.

That will be beneficial from both business and environmental standpoints, says Knight’s David Main: “This system takes sprayer control onto the next level. It has the potential to pay for itself very rapidly by preventing over-lapping of sprays and fertilisers.
“With a conventional sprayer that switches off in three metre sections, the first five nozzles could over-apply to a significant area before the sixth one reaches a sprayed area and all six are switched off.
“That could waste significant quantities of product, particularly in long tapering fields. Switching off nozzles individually is much more accurate and less wasteful. In addition to potential product savings of 10% - 15%, overlap areas could be cut to less than one per cent”.
“Switching boom sections off too early risks leaving patches of un-sprayed crop. With weeds like Black-grass than can re-infest a crop from a very small plant population, that would be a very costly mistake”.
“Combined with Knight’s Maximiser system it will also guarantee applications are accurate and even right to the edge of the sprayer area at all times”.
He adds that the system could also improve environmental compliance by ensuring that it operates to the highest standards by eliminating over-application of chemicals and fertiliser on field margins and headlands.
The controllers fit neatly onto the spray boom, with the electronics being protected from chemicals themselves via non-return valves.

Knight Farm machinery will also be demonstrating the Knight Trailblazer steering axle trailed sprayer at this year's event, make sure to visit them on stand A14 to book your test drive.

Prolong fungicide efficacy by using multi-sites against Septoria

With SDHI resistance threatening to hamper the ability of these chemistries to effectively control Septoria, growers should protect winter-sown wheat crops with an early application of a folpet-based fungicide. That is the advice from Adama Agricultural Solutions, which will be using this year’s CropTec event to warn growers that unless adequate steps are taken to protect the current armoury of fungicides, the efficacy of these products will continue to diminish, with growers subsequently left with a limited choice of crop protection options.

Septoria resistance to SDHI fungicides has been well documented over the last 12 months, with growers and agronomists being warned that the efficacy of these products could become eroded.

“Growers need to be aware that unless they protect the ongoing efficacy of SDHI chemistries, they may reach a point when they can no longer rely on this technology to provide foolproof protection against Septoria,” advises Andy Bailey, Adama’s Cereals Fungicide Technical Specialist. “With no new modes of protection arriving in the short term, and increasing regulatory pressures threatening the restriction and/or removal of many active ingredients, we could be looking at a scarcity of effective crop protection products in future years.

“Growers therefore have a responsibility to protect and prolong the efficacy and lifespan of existing chemistries by utilising alternative modes of protection, namely multi-sites, to slow the rate of resistance.”

Mr Bailey also warns that growers need to reduce their reliance on azoles. “Azoles still provide some curative benefit, but they are no longer fully effective in this role,” he warns. “In fact, trials have shown that the preventative effect of azoles has reduced by 20% over the last 10 years, while their curative efficacy has fallen by a huge 60% or more.”

In order to limit the effects of disease resistance, Mr Bailey advises growers to use a three-way stack of SDHI, azole and multi-site chemistries. “Stacking chemicals is recognised as the most efficient and effective method of crop protection,” he explains. “But it is important to ensure that the multi-site chemistry doesn’t impact on triazole uptake. To get the best results, a multi-site active, such as folpet, should be applied prior to stem extension at T0 and again at T1 to protect the newly emerged leaf 3. If disease pressures remain high, folpet can also be applied at T2 to combat fresh and spreading infections.”

Folpet-based products such as Arizona (straight folpet at 500 g/l) and Manitoba (folpet at 375 g/l plus epoxiconazole at 50 g/l) provide three stages of biochemical protection and are therefore less susceptible to resistant mutations. “They are more robust and as such are vital to prolong the role of azoles and SDHIs,” Andy continues. “New research even indicates that using folpet-based products such as Arizona can counteract the effects of selection pressure thereby making subsequent Septoria infections more sensitive to epoxiconazole.

“Folpet also aids green leaf retention, particularly when applied at T1, with this translating to the potential for improved yield benefits when compared to crops treated with chlorothalonil.”

Products such as Arizona and Manitoba provide an effective anti-resistance effect for the control of Septoria and also give good protection against other key cereal diseases including Yellow Rust. “Using these products early in the season reduces selection pressure and gives broad spectrum, flexible disease control in cereal crops. They can be used as standalone products or as mix partners for straight SDHI’s to provide a full ‘belt and braces’ approach to cereal crop protection,” Mr Bailey concludes.

Adama’s technical experts will also be on hand throughout CropTec to discuss the company’s recommendations for oilseed rape canopy management and to recommend suitable herbicide options for spring-sown cereals.

Visitors to the Adama stand will also be able to earn up to two BASIS points by completing a crop protection knowledge trail. For more information, or to find out more about Adama’s folpet-based fungicides, go to www.adama.com/uk
