Cross Cut Chainsaw Chain.

Got a problem one of you may be able to help me with.
Had 2 very large Ash trees dropped last year (Die back). Some of the trunk rounds are difficult to split for fire wood. Tried wood splitting grenades, but at 78 I have to have a lie down after a few swings. These rounds are heavy and much to large to put through my splitter. What can I get in the way of a chain (16 in Husqvarna) that will cut against the grain. Thanks lads.

Just chew through them with a normal sharp chain, until they're small enough to get on to your splitter, don't think there is a special chain as such.

I think you can get chains that are a different pitch that work better. I'm not knowledgeable on it but go to a saw center and I'm sure they will keep you right.

I think you mean a ripping chain rather than cross cutting, which in my terminology is a regular chain. They are freely avail.able, but beware as they are dangerous if used as a cross cutter.
I personally would try and find a screw splitter as they are ideal for this situation with very large rounds they will work round and round the slab after a b it of practice

Not sure what you mean as most chainsaw chain is for Crosscutting across the grain . You can get Ripping chain for cutting along the grain and is often used on "Alaskan Mills" It has a much shallower angle on the teeth ,10 degrees i think and chisel or micro chisel.

This. Normal chains are cross-cutting, the specialist ones for going along the grain (same direction as it would be split) are rip chains.

Edit: as nails said ;)

You can sharpen an ordinary chain to more chisel than is standard or you can order a proper chain from this Co;

Not an expert on wood types, but I had a similar problem earlier in the year with some very large pine tree rounds and I managed to quarter them with my 18” Stihl without too much problem. Perhaps just try a new chain first?

Can't you just make the rounds smaller, sometimes i make the rounds pitifully thin so they will split easier.
O
, appreciate this is a pita and would obviously been easier done to begin with but better than cutting the wrong way?

trouble is Nick you never like to remember how old you are

Trouble is, once you start not doing X or Y you soon lose the strength and muscle mass. Provided a person has the strength and reflexes and is conscientious in it's use, I wouldn't try to deter people from doing things they enjoy doing.

I have met increasing numbers of people who are 80+ and living near fully able lives. It is possible.

credit to you at 78 being up to wielding a large chainsaw but what not get someone in as it's a one off?🙂
can just see the headline now, 'senior in chain saw accident cuts own head off;
'mr smith a witness at the scene said ' yea cut hes own heid off, right off ' :oops:

a full chisel chain will cut it well enough, dry old ash will take the edge off but not for awhile, just watch for it kicking up and you want a bar wider than the cut which if you cut it the way cj has mentioned above you would easily safely be able to with a 16 inch bar because youre round will be way less than that width.

op needs to look at the bar and see what is marked on it ref what pitch gauge and count how many links the current one has of chain is and then look to get a full chisel one of its same spec.if possible.

as long as someone has strength agility and good coordination and awarnees of the dangers and think about thye job before doing it it will be fine ... hopefully :unsure: :nailbiting:😂

I’ll have to agree with you.at 62 my mind says I can do it but body says otherwise.i don’t consider myself old time marches on
nick...

There are 80 year olds out there who are walking many miles a day or perfectly capable of doing all kinds of activities any adult could reasonably be expected to do.

By contrast there are an increasing number of middle aged adults whose health you would conclude is shot to bits.
