Good afternoon all, Currently doing a lot of head scratching over the above. Putting in new accommodation for a few cows. What would be a good, cost effective option? Autumn block calving, medium cows, 600 - 650kg ish, Medium yielding (7-7500l), 5 - 6 month housing period. tractor scraped. Are mattresses really worth over twice as much as a mat? What have people got, and how do you rate them?

I have considered sand, but don't really fancy the ffaff with handling the slurry. Needs to run through fairly long channels. I also don't really want to have to build a drive in lagoon with settlement tank.

TIA

I wouldn’t use sand better with sawdust
Had both matts and mattresses Cows lie on both

I certainly rate my teemoore mattresses, much better than my Mayo mats. IIRC Kraiburg do some mats that are more expensive than a lot of mattresses.
Mats or mattresses, not all are alike, I've seen mattresses that I don't like the look of after a few years, my teemores are on their 7th year and still as good as new.

I put in the 30mm kraiberg roll a few months ago. Early days but very happy with it. Wouldn't go mats again even though the kraiberg interlocking 30mm mats were around €20 cheaper per space. And unless cows are housed full time, I don't think there's need for mattresses. Just my opinion.

We put in individual puzzle mats in 2015 and then went for some wela longline which we finished a few months ago. I cant remember the exact cost but think it was just over £100 for a 1.2m wide bed.

I dont know which make of mattresses we have but the foam inside had seen its best days and I was persuaded to invest in putting new 30mm recon foam in. What a difference - lying times are much improved and (along with other factors) a massive reduction in foot problems.

What sort of money per bed was the roll??

Anyone have wilsons mattress? Would they be a compromise between the kraiberg and something like a mayo matt? Housed all year

We have them and I would't have them again. After service had been awful as we have had problems. Been in two years now and top cover has splits in already.
