I booked some into the main place in the country that takes these today. Fortunately it is not too far away.

Three weeks ahead price; Boars 5p per kg, sows 15p.

I may unbook them.
i did tell you ages ago have a day out go up to leek . even if you dont make a fortune its got to be better than what youve been quoted you will meet some proper people and if the sun shines see some lovly countryside. if the cloud dosnt lift its sh1t.

Leeks okay if your face fits, not so much if it doesn't :( . Market Drayton prices hold up pretty well compared to the other pig markets. Boars are usually between 1p and 10p/kg, so the quoted price in the OP is in the mid range , Sows are more variable, but this last week averaged 41p/kg, topping at 60p/kg.

Should be circa 140p but "overweight" 60-70p which affects next week's SPP

I also think the 14000 pigs culled thus far is way out of date
The price for the overweights is awful but what do you do with them? My wife bought some huge rashers of prepacked bacon last week, obviously from an overweight, opened the packet threw it straight in the bin, it stunk of boar taint. Is there any encouragement by the processors the prioritise boars and keep gilts back? 30 years ago when my father managed a pig unit the boars all went as porkers/light cutters and only the gilts kept for bacon. Would also help with welfare if those boars weren’t gang raping the gilts at 120kg

We had a factory fire here in NI years approx 15 years ago. Couldn't get pigs away. Gave a dealer 100 pigs one Monday morning 130kg= £40. After having pigs on our farm for over 50 years we were out of them within six months.

I'm 50 and I remember as a child a man coming and "cutting" all the boars at approx 20 kg. Scalpel blade and blue spray..no anaesthetic. Cotton wool in both ears.

isn't it possible to devise a 'maintenence only' diet so they don't get over wt so quickly :scratchhead:
People are trying that but the modern pig is bred to grow, not to stand still. It's difficult to make a ration that's cheap and does maintenance only. Also a welfare issue if you get it wrong.

Obviously pigs growing all through the system so holding back the biggest alone is not enough

The rollercoaster is still on a downward trajectory as well. I can see a point in the near future that they will cost money to render

Still a massive number of rolled pigs in the system and the abattoirs are not catching up yet
Fingers crossed for some pre Christmas trade to reduce the number of Rolled pigs but how much cheap pork has been frozen down this last couple of months and what will the situation look like in mid jan after the short bank holiday weeks. Don’t think the promised influx of butchers has materialised and until the cheap imports are not there don’t have a lot of hope for the situation to improve. Anybody in the know as to are the Europeans cutting herd numbers as with prices at around £1 a kilo they must be losing money hand over fist with feed prices as they are.

Correct me if I’m wrong and I’m sure you lot will, bearing in mind I don’t keep big numbers of pigs or have been about long enough to know the bigger picture in the pig world.
But, these farms who have a contract with the processors who were many years ago probably happy to sign up to for various reasons have now been told it’s not worth the paper it’s written on. They have probably done everything possible to keep their end of the bargain, including spending lots of money and hours of work to jump through the hoops needed only to be told “thanks but no thanks, we don’t want your pigs this week”.
Now, in desperation they are dumping pigs in the market. The same markets they abandoned to sell direct and hoping they can bail them out of the muck.
Will these farms who have been selling on contract be so keen to sign up again once thing come back to normal?

Apologies totally off topic but the right people to ask are on here.
Our feed chap is struggling to keep himself stocked (Duffields giving him the now standard line of 'staff issues'), is it ok to give weaners 18% ewe nuts for 24/48 hrs, or do I need to have a drive round to try and find pig food ? thanks.

Think selby will be the only market with 100 plus finished pigs per week. When some producers will be marketing 2000 plus pigs per week even 10-20% held back will be a bit too much too much for the live markets.

Market Drayton had just shy of 300 head across all classes of pigs, last sale, but as @Batty quite rightly says these are still insignificant numbers compared to the ones some larger individual producers will be sending to slaughter, weekly. I don't think that anyone is seriously suggesting that the few livestock markets that hold pig sales are a realistic outlet for those who find themselves overstocked with these large numbers.
