Cultural control of ryegrass

We have some quite bad ryegrass can you tell me what is the best practice ie autumn cultivations and then cultivations pre spring drilling . Fields are in arable rotation and we want to continue with this . Thanks

when you have an answer let me know. we thought we were winning, wrong , youve got to grow the seed in the drilling prof[le before you sow. just burnt off 35 acres wb and re drilled, couldt afford the seed return , it had had the kitchen sink chucked at it i think agrono s luv it!

Getting better but 1 bad year and you are back to square 1. This year looks dirty as we didn't have enough nerve to hold off drilling long enough after 2 horrendous autumn's. Also the warm winter has kept the rg coming

I totally agree with this. The real problem is that every single thing on this list has a price tag attached. Years of min till and early drilling are coming back to haunt us and we are paying for it now.

Please can you tell me can you use Broadway Star if you ve used Hatra in the same growing season ? And have you used it with any effect and how have you applied it ? Thanks

Tine grass harrows ,do a good job when its dry , do it a few times till crop too big ,and if r g gets above crop weed wipe it , can take a lotnout if carefull

I've used Proverb for mainly ryegrass this spring after a grass ley. If any gets through I'll go back with either Axial or Sword up to gs41. Then rogue like my life depended on it.

We think ……… but not 100% sure yet that a combination of delayed direct drilling winter wheat to November, then planting stubble turnips to be grazed hard by sheep, before returning into direct drilled spring wheat is working. We are using a pre-em as per the attached. Also use high seed rates minimum of 250kg/ha and go upwards.

We tried and given up on rotational ploughing. Early drilling is a big no no in our experience.

We’ll also desiccate winter wheat prior to harvest if needed and then spray off anything left after the sheep in the spring.

We also have a field that went into grass for 5 years now back into winter wheat. We won’t know if it’s worked till June time though.

My overiding feeling though is if you’ve got it bad and to avoid the hassle and cost of fighting it you should just direct drill continuous spring barley maybe using a cover crop inbetween for a very long while and build your farming system around it to be a very low cost structure and a part time job.

I find a ploughed in crop of winter beans treated with kerb the best reset button. Or failing that we are fortunate that we have the option of sunflowers or maize, autumn plough and a sprayed off cover crop before the grass sets seed is often as clean as you can get.

We had a problem when we were conventional, now we have long grass leys in rotation it is not a big problem in the arable phase.
Put it down to grass for a couple of years?
(Mind you our expectation of clean would not be so high!)
