what is the cut off date in your experince for combinable crops vs where you farm in the country, my experience is end of march here in the south east for any decient yield. one week to go here....

Mid April for linseed and beans. But we will be drilling after that, make no mistake. But that was before these big prices. It is looking like the combine will have a very quiet August.

Depending on weather post drilling, April sown crops can out yield March sown ones.

Given how cold seedbeds are at the moment "Cuckoo corn" may be the better bet this season. At least it might germinate and get going quickly unlike what has been forced into cold wet ground in Feb/March.

I don't justify abandoning drilling just because it's 1st April, especially in Sussex.

it done fine, not our barley, dad just drilled it for somebody, we planted his spuds not long before that. that was in northern ireland dont think much barley would be in before mid march there, i do remember dad combining in october, never before 1st september

he drilled it for a neighbour, he had only just ploughed the field, the farmer in question was quite laid back n would not have been in a rush, to be fair i think he had pulled out a few hedges so that would have delayed things a bit

Don't give up yet...in recent years our top yielding crop of spring wheat was drilled on April 16th (better than earlier drilled crops) and a field of spring rape driled on the May bank holiday out-yielded crops drilled 6 weeks earlier in March....but I have a feeling this year is gong to be different...!!!

Don't think we have much choice, just carry on till its all in. Although cold it looks drier here for a few days, so we will start making a mess! Still got 40 acres to plough....

I am not worried yet, the winter wheat we drilled at the start of the month has just roots on it,but as we don't normally start wheat till the 20th August it's still got 5 months of growing season. As for barley, no rush yet, drilled a lot early last year and the rain and cold in April hammered it so hopefully next week we might start

The more I look at the weather, and the more I look at the date the happier I am to have a wodge of fallow land to have a crack at this summer. Wit the exception of a small bit of OSR, I can see a good % of my wheat drilled before there is much ready to cut. Infact, now we have started loading lorries with grain I am happier than I was three months ago.
