Cydectin LA injection

What are peoples views on using Cydectin LA injection?

I used it on my ewes as a pre lambing wormer this year for the first time ever. I am happy with the result as we still haven't wormed the lambs or even fly sprayed them as 99% are still clean.

The added bonus is that I also appear to be tick free in the ewes and lambs this year, whereas every year before I would see ticks on most lambs.

The expensive pound per ewe cost of the injection is beginning to look better value now that the subsequent savings are noted.

The only concern is that killing the worms daily over a long period may not be good for the sheeps immunity, so would be interested in hearing other peoples thoughts or experiences.

Just to note, my ewes (Romneys) are only wormed once a year and the wormer group is changed yearly.

Works well (to begin with)and won't do any harm to your ewes immunity but its one of the best things you can do to build a resistant worm population

Do. A. Search. One of the most frequent questions/statements.

Invariably people doing it starts out and says oh wow it's great everyone should do this. A few years later they are banjaxed with resistance.

Show me the links, as I cant find any............. hence the reason for asking !!

Totally agree with green grass. Was all the fashion round here for a while people raving about how much money was being saved. Next thing they can't find a wormer to kill anything

We've been using it for years on all our breeding stock every autumn to control scab. It does a good job with scab but not sure it touches the worms these days.

Refugia... If using LA for worm control then always keep at least 10-15% of your flock untreated, usually the fittest, healthiest looking animals and this will ensure that there are at least some 'susceptible' worms remaining on the pasture to dilute any resistant worms that may be appearing.

As has been said - it's a real ticking time bomb. Once it stops working then you can rule out all the group 3 wormers (clear). Group 1 (white) has massive resistance levels, growing levels in group 2 (yellow).

I'm amazed we can keep selling it (there are other options for scab) in this country.

I still use it on my lambing hogs, as they are the group that will see most benefit and are most likely to shed the most eggs onto pasture. They then run with the untreated single bearing ewes all summer. In theory, any Cydectin resistant eggs that get shed will be diluted by the eggs from the ewes, as well as being hovered up & killed by those mature ewes.
