It’s not a millennial issue sh!t like this has been going on for years stupid is what stupid does has a car brought in by the aa as a non starter after questioning the female driver she aid she has topped it up with oil the evening before and now it won’t start ,how much did it need I asked oh I put 3 cans in .ok 3 litres seems a lot but you never know I asked if she had a can of oil on her oh yes they are in the boot one look told me all I needed to know they were 5l cans and she had hydraulic lock the engine she said I thought it needed filling to the top this was 30 years ago

It is almost a matter of pride not to be able to do anything in some parts of society
A lot of people have got into the habit of not trying to do anything as they are lazy (or smart?) and don't want to get their hands dirty. Whenever something practical needs doing, the folks in the clean trousers will stand back and watch. That's why they are rich and the "doers" always remain "doers".

Also been there and done it, fortunately the glue was white so I could see it in the dark and rain on a windswept common, as it spurted out of the hole in the tyre as I pumped it up.
First experience of the gunk was on a milk round in heavily built up area when it was absolutely lashing it down. You wouldn't believe how much comes out of that little can. Hole was too big foam was floating down full width of street for a significant distance a foot deep.. Everyone knew me and I was asked about it for weeks afterwards.

Had an idiot come into the yard on friday because he'd got a blow out due to a pot hole on the road at the end of our drive. I pointed out that it was a public highway and nothing to do with us and his reply was that we'd made the pothole because of farm traffic. Told him to do one and have now had a letter from his solicitor requesting payment for the tyre! I am going to run with this as I would like to see what the small claims court says seeing that the pot hole is on a public highway and 100m from our farm entrance. I am going to run up this idiots legal bill for a few months.
Well I think I can beat that, I was threatened with legal action from a solicitor because their client didn't receive PPE when working on the Amoco oil refinery in 1972.....
It was actually the previous owner of my house who ran the construction company. It was wound up sometime in the late 70's. He died 10 years ago. I would have been 3 years old at the time. Despite the absurdity of it all, I received a court summons. Did get an apology from the court eventually, but not from the barsteward solicitor.

Friend sent me a pic, their 19 year old daughter came home and said there’s a funny noise coming from the car

At the age of 18 my daughter regularly won the YFC wheel changing challenges at the regional rallies and she will happily set about doing the same some 20 odd years later....

The first wheel I changed for somebody who isn't family was for a male acquaintance. I was driving home on a road I rarely use, and there he was with a flat tyre, as forlorn as they come. He really didn't know how to use the jack safely, and didn't have the handbook with instructions in his car!

Reminds me of a chap I passed with a flat when I was going to pick the eldest up from junior school - He was still there when I was on the way back sitting bemused on the tarmac with his feet under the car either side of the wheel tugging at the wheel without success having taken the wheelnuts off - I stopped to offer advice, the main part of which was that he have another look in the toolkit and try and identify the jack ( and then use it) !!!

I'm sure manufactures would say its to keep costs down, but I'd much sooner have a spare wheel, than rely on a tin of glue in the rain and dark in the middle of winter!
Think you will find compressor and gue is not the cheap option, its lighter and makes more space, I notice Ford are back to all space savers.

It used to be Law that a Taxi had to carry a spare wheel.

When I got my first car, dad came into the shed one evening, to show me where the jack went and some helpful hints on wheel changing.
I then did a dummy run to show him I’d taken in what I’d been shown. Once all the jack and tools etc were stowed away, he flicked the shed lights off, and said ‘do it again’.
Since then I’ve always checked I know where locking nut sockets are, and carry a torch.

My father had me changing wheels as soon as I could lift one on, for practice and for real, especially if it was raining. :( Character-building stuff though which, as a good father, I shall inflict on my own children too, if it's raining when the time comes... :angelic:

My mother learnt to drive in the late 1950's, not that many women did then; her father was a RN officer and had a friend of his from the Naval Provost give her driving lessons. The lessons were the standard ones in the RN then, and included not just the handling of the car, but changing wheels, spark plugs and general maintenance etc. too, which she carried on doing for herself as long as she was able.

Get her to pay the bill for the replacement wheel and half the tyre. That will concentrate her mind on how needless an expense effects her life and puts her priorities in the right place. A stop and a quick phonecall to you or International Rescue would have prevented all of this. She probably won't learn unless taught.

Only works if you know you have a problem tho. Maybe this is why they fit tyre pressure sensors to some cars now.....
Not some, all. It is now compulsory on all new cars. Good thing too, because I've seen many cars over the years with a tyre so flat it's nearly down to the rim with oblivious drivers no doubt wondering why the car was swaying about so much.
