Thank you for all the reply’s.

I know its a bit comical maybe but the land is flat and apart from looking like a fool to the neighbours i think it could be good to use the land Ive got.

as for spraying etc i have all the kit needed so no need to ask any one. Only thing im missing is the dam combine which i dont really want to buy but there is no other option

still on the fence
Where in north wales are you ,ive got family that farm on the lleyn can only grow spring corn their sea burns it off over the winter!... As for combines whats the roads like to get one their and how many acres to cut. Used to be lots of cheap combines round here £500 and would work 20 years ago then scrap went up...….

“Dad thinks I’m mad”

I used to try to drag Dad ‘out of the past’ on a regular basis when I was younger.

Fast forward 30 years, with an 18 year old nipping at my heals (and trying to teach me how to suck eggs), can I just say @JET, maybe your dad has a point 😂

We all eventually turn into our fathers but it's only experience that gets us there!

Livestock farmers should be compulsory made to grow 20 acres of corn. After a few years of struggling to plant it in the spring, enduring the mandatory drought in May, and the almighty palaver of trying to harvest in August ( which has turned into the wettest month of the year ), they'll be happy to buy in grain @ £500/ ton, and straw @ £1000 / ton. :)

Try it by all means though. ;)

Aye, and arable farmers ought to be made to cancel their skiing holidays and puddle about feeding sheep all winter, only to find a few have dropped dead/wandered off, if your really lucky you'll find them on deaths door, perform a dramatic rescue, throw a dose of money at the vet, and the feckin things will still die. :p

Go for it. Buy one that is pre electronics. Once you have got it sorted out it will usually last forever on a small acreage. Maybe though a couple of years of pain getting to that point but stick with it and it will serve you well.

You need to try and find an old genuine combine at a retirement sale. One that is hopefully operational. 80 or 15 series NH or class senator or dominator.

Are you handy with spanners? Your main problem is it won't breakdown until crop is ready and you are out cutting. It might be worth trying some early for crimping then you will get two shots at harvest timing.

Unless your planning on getting into big acres I'd be watching out for a clean 10ft cut machine. You'll get them for small money and most have no electronics at all apart from a couple of lights. I started out with a Massey 520 which I still have and use on one piece of land away from home thats up a very narrow road that the bigger combine won't fit up. The 520 cut over 60 acres for me last year to give you some indication of what a small combine can still do.
