Daily vehicle checks

Are you wanting to record it for the purposes if there was an accident or because you actually want to check your vehicle daily; if its the latter don't worry about writing it down, if its the former a printed out spreadsheet in the cab filled in once done will suffice.

We use a spreadsheet that is printed. Fill it in daily, one sheet has 7 days on it so one sheet a week.
Not hard to do and makes sure we have any problems reported.

My opinion is. If a driver does not check his vehicle daily then they should not have a driver's license. No bits of paper can check a vehicle for them.

Its for tractors and any trailed implement from mainly the safety aspect .Tractors are dealer serviced and trailers are hired or one year old.

Encourage a daily walk around check of machines before departure, surprising what can be spotted. I notice that Pilots always do this before departing despite all the tech service that goes on elsewhere.
My shouting mantra to household occupants as they leave. Check....oil, water, lights & tyres. The answer is usually "anyone seen dad today, it's very quiet here"..............

Pilots do the walk around because despite the servicing etc, once they sign the handover form they have accepted the aircraft are legally responsible for that aircraft.

I'm not a fan of the tick box culture - the number of times I've seen lorry drivers filling in the daily check sheet halfway through the day or just before going back to the yard renders the paperwork almost worthless. One haulier I have come across got so fed up with drivers cheating that they have hand held computers that the driver has to use when doing the check & they get randomly prompted to take pictures of say tyre tread or wheel nuts & record tyre pressures, any defects must be photographed as well. Anyone leaving the yard without having submitted their report or cheating the system in any way is sacked for gross misconduct.
