As far as I know no, you just have to show the EA you've put things in place to stop polution into the water.

EA would probably want to come and do a site survey. Every site will be different and assessed individually I'd have thought.

At the time of the grant scheme in NI in 2008, the distance was 10m.

You may have to do a stupid test hole, fill it with 1000 ltrs or whatever of water and time how long it takes to go down. Then some nice men in suits and polished shoes will do extensive calculations and propose a planned route for a stone drain to carry surface water away. This drain will run in the exact same place that you had planned to put it anyway seeing as you've farmed the place for donky years and up to now, water will not flow uphill!!!!

Actually it is the same in England. Any slurry store must be 10m away from any water course or drain. If you pipe a ditch and build closer than 10 m, you will need EA approval.

Don'tforget that we have not got a joned up government. Planning, building regulations and the EA are all separate anddn't tell each other what you hope to do. It is up to you or your agent to do so.

I was on a farm walk about 4 years ago at a large and expanding dairy farm, they had moved a stream over so they could put up new sheds but as far as I could gather they hadn't told anyone.

Visited a farm in Cumbria where they had piped the beck straight under the cubicle shed.

Used to have a set of buildings where the ditch had been diverted in Victorian times so the water could be used to wash The muck back in the ditch.
Somehow suspect it would not be approved today
