Could be heydale ayrshires a great herd up there, where abouts exactly @jade35 ?
We went up the back roads from behind the Roaches and the cows were on our right in field just before junction to turn right and go up hill to Flash. Cleared fields on left down on slightly flatter land and Fendt working nearby.

Some cows in field were quite white but most were usual Ayrshire colouring.

Must admit it has been lovely to see so many dairy cows out and about in the Peaks and as for the cows around Longnor:love:

That's spooky @Jade, we were driving round the roaches yesterday. We are up here for a few days from devon, staying near leek (missed the market you all talk about!). Today we saw surprising number of cows on high peaks. Good part of the world to be a nosey farmer, you can see for miles

Just have to remember to try and keep at least one eye on the road! Those valleys look a long way down sometimes:nailbiting: but the views are stunning. @white_stuffed have you been on the Longor road yet from the Roaches to Crowdecote?

I know a dairy herd is there but I am sure they're Holstein, maybe red+white Holstein you saw if they were milk cows.
The cows you'd probably saw at longnor (if they were Holsteins) would have been the herd that's been selling cows in leek market and topped the market this last week I see from the report although I didn't go.

Saw what looked like several herds in the Longnor area inc one that was freeze branded with pj on the left side
the same as some of the cows at Leek on Tuesday.

They will be the johnson brothers at longnor ...3 farms between them......and tbe ayrshires at farm behind roaches sounds like a farm at gradbach ....went there a few yrs ago to nfu farm walk....the clever chap had dug a 3 inch pipe into the start of the river dane high above his steading and reduced it down to an inch at his farm and it powered a generator and water then went back into river dane....simples....and was earning him 80 quid a day for ever......simply lovleh

Thanks @dogglercowman1 Driving around this area has been really interesting. The amount of land that is down to rushes and a smallish number of rough sheep is not unexpected and then you drive on a little further and you find a dairy farm in an unexpected place. Respect for the tanker drivers and feed delivery drivers(y) to reach some of those farms in bad weather must take some nerve !!

It won't be Berresford's (heydale) they are near Tideswell, or Broadley's (brundcliffe) they are on the a515 ashbourne-buxton road.
I think it'll either be Tunnicliffe's at Gradbach, they have pedigree shorthorns. Or there's a few shorthorn type herds around Thorncliffe which is on the main leek-buxton road.
The PJ cows will be Philip Johnson and his brother, they milk 300 cows on two farms between Longnor and Leek.
Surprising number of good dairy herds in that area actually, and most sell plenty of heifers in leek.
