I’m a fairly chilled out kinda dude who can accept that everyone has issues at times but MV have pushed me over the edge recently to the point of me having a full on chuck my toys out the pram moment. I’ve had feed not turn up, the wrong feed turn up, feed I haven’t even ordered turn up. You seriously couldn’t make it up!Better had be. Consultants have been telling farmers to become flying herds for years. Coming home to roost now. It's only going to get worse. Some farmers cannot go back to rearing their own. Sexed semen means you rear less surplus heifers, not more just in case you get a run of bull calves. What surprises me, a lot of cows on the market, yet both milk, and barreners, are in short supply, milkers are strong money, demand dictates that, just doesn't 'quite' add up. Perfectly happy with it though, high milk demand, high barren price, both are excellent for dairy farmers.
Can you feed less? I know I will be.Our cake price just had a big hike. Effect on our milkers = approx £960 cost increase (plus some for the 7 month old hfrs). Milk price increase 2.5 ppl this month effect £1,125. Allowing for the other price increases, (fuel, ferts etc) milk prices not keeping up.
till farmers get used to sexed, its reckoned they 'overuse' it, so this year, for us a break from rearing dairy hfrs, beef ones instead !Consultants have been telling farmers to become flying herds for years. a fair proportion of todays cake must still be being made with wheat that was purchased at <£200/tonne todays wheat cost to mills is up 50% on that....and not quoting for next winter, £450 ? anyone's guess, and guess it will be.
My spring block is going all beef this time due to unreal conception rates to sexed in the autumn herd. We’re going to end up over run with heifers and subsequently over run with cows.till farmers get used to sexed, its reckoned they 'overuse' it, so this year, for us a break from rearing dairy hfrs, beef ones instead !

If you’ve max’ed out your farms potential with cows on a flying herd system as the experts advised then there’s no room in system for young stock. No spare labour/buildings or slurry storage so only option would be to cut cow numbers which would be a big financial blow to income/turnover and see no benefit for 2 years if ever. Why can't they go back to rear there own?
It it raises profits who cares about income/turnover, with talk like that you’d make a fine consultant. If you’ve max’ed out your farms potential with cows on a flying herd system as the experts advised then there’s no room in system for young stock.
