Dairy herd average

Ok, so in the US we measure milk by the pound. 8 pounds equal a gallon.

our bulk tank average is currently at 14,100 pounds. 1762.5 Gallons. 6672 liters.

i forget the protein and butterfat off hand though, will check after breakfast.

We are at 160. We downsized since last year. Cull cow prices went way up and it was easier to get rid of hard breeders and the nut jobs. our peak was 225 eight years ago, shipping 23,000 pounds a day. However, we never had a good butterfat.

I genuinely didn't know there were any 'British size' dairy farms in the US, I trained at The Cow Palace in Washington State which is something like 10k cows. You have enlightened me, I thought wrongly they were all massive.

We are actually the largest in the county. Very few dairies around here. Most are milking 50. On the county south of us there's a few milking 500+. Everyone our size is selling out. Can't keep help due to drugs and crime. Not to mention the children don't wanna milk. Everyone wants to be a grain farmer!

What sort of processors is there over your way.?
There are 2 big ones here. A corporation type and a co-op type. Both multi-nationals.
Some mid size ones and more smaller ones.

The co-ops are still around, but dieing out. There are large corporations such as Walmart and Deans food. We ship to a regional processor, I'd consider them small. Always having problems with drivers and rates and what not. Makes you wanna quit the business thinking about how bad you are getting gouged.

Do you keep your cows in year round? How many acres per cow do you own/rent?

What is your nearest town?

Yes we keep them in and milk year round. We are currently in a lull milking our lowest number since the 80's, but I expect the number to go up in Janruary.

Own/rent ground total is about 1,500 acres. 750 acre corn 550 acre beans 100 acre wheat 100 acres alfalfa

Closest "town" is Ravenna, actually quite populated and it's just a mile down the road. Bunch of heroin addicts and meth heads live there, some decent folks, but it seems fewer these days. Kent is ten minutes away. Mantua is a straight shot few miles north, it's pretty decent, though you got your typical low life sort there too.

My sister worked on a kid's summer camp in Ohio 2 years ago, loads of kids from poor areas in Cleveland were sent to it, she was shocked at some of the stories the children told her and she had to write some reports to the police about child abuse etc. these kids were facing at their home with alcoholic/druggie parents.

Overall, she did not liek Ohio at all, no offence to you but she was just shocked at the state of some of the towns. Why is there such a meth problem over there?
