Situation Vacant Dairy student / person new to farming who wants to learn

Good morning,

Student / young person / somebody who is new to farming and wants to learn about cows.

  • Work experience placement available from 20th September 2018 until 20th November 2018.
  • All food / meals + delaval milking overalls provided. Separate on farm 2 bedroom cottage, internet and use of a farm car.
  • Payment is by negotiation.

We are an organic dairy farm with a small herd of high yielding Holstein cows which are paddock grazed and block calved over 9 weeks. We have a modern 16/32 parlour and good quality young stock rearing facilities.

The work placement:
You will be part of a small team who are carefully managing the calving cows, looking after the new born calves and feeding the older calves. If things go quiet on the maternity ward, you will be helping with the dairy cows and getting involved with the milking routine.

We will show you how to:
  • Successfully transition a high yielding dry cow to high yielding milking cow
  • Accurately calve a cow
  • All aspects of dairy young stock management - colostrum procedures, dehorning and how to manage the feeding of a calf to ensure she is on track for a successful future and calve at 24months.
  • Telehandler driver training + application for telehandler licence if you are interested.

This placement is suitable for somebody with either no farming experience or lots of previous farm experience - what ever the situation, we will push you to learn new skills.
We are a female friendly farm and we are part of the women in dairy group. All nationalities, types of people are welcome to apply. Languages are no problem. You need to be able to wake up early, eat loads of food and enjoy working hard.

The farm is in a rural part of Herefordshire, England. Nice local town and the city of Birmingham is 45mins away.
We give back what we receive - hard working and enthusiastic people will be well rewarded with a challenging and very interesting work placement. Previous student references available.

Please send PM message for further information.

Many thanks.
